Double clutching

What is double clutching?I heard it used a couple of times but never understood what it is and how it works. Can someone pelase explain?Thanks in advance

when you downshift you rev the engine to the rpm at which the next gear would engage at thereby smoothening(is that a word?) the process so you dont get that retarded jerk when you downshift.

Double shifting was mostly relavent when cars didn't have syncronizers. You would have to take the car out of gear, let the clutch out, then push it in again and shift into the next gear to get everything spinning at the same speed. Hope this helps.
