Po442

I am new here and joined because I have several concerns with my 2000 LT, 53,000miles. One question has already been answered (thanks gregfry). Here are the others (I'm trying to not be long-winded):

1. What is code PO442, which was pulled after my SES light came on.

2. I have noticed a strong odor of gasoline if I fill the tank. Once a few months ago when the tank was topped off by someone else, I noticed a rather large puddle of gasoline under the vehicle after it was parked. It was definitely gas and it only happened that one time. Now, I just avoid filling up to avoid the odor. At the 35,000 maintenance the fuel filter was changed, fluid flushed, etd. by the dealer. Does this have anything to do with the TSB concerning the fuel system?

3. I am now aware after researching today of the problem of excessive oil consumption, which also generated a TSB. I've had this problem. How is that particular problem remedied?

I have learned a great deal reading the posts in this forum and thank everyone for the information and knowledge they share here. It's great.

Re: Po442

I'm thinking about getting a 2000 LT. Where do you find the TSBs? How much oil are you consuming? How fast do you burn a quart (miles)?

You don't say 'where' under the vehicle the puddle of gas was.

Who pulled a code for you but didn't have the lookup table to tell you what it was?

Re: Po442

I found the TSBs by doing a Google search for TSB and happened upon one for Chevy trucks. I have been doing this for a couple of years because the mechanics at my dealership seem to have difficulty diagnosing, so I have had to find TSBs on the web, print them up, and give them to them. There have been problems that they could not diagnose (they keep the vehicle for a couple of days, then say they
don't know what the problem is, other people haven't complained of this, yada, yada, yada). But I was able to provide the TSB so they could figure out what to do, and sometimes they didn't like that coming from a woman. Anyway, I don't know how to post a link, so I'll type out the web address:
//alldata.com/TSB/11/001165FY.html
(my browser showed no www at the beginning of the site).

The gas puddle was around the passenger and driver seat area.

The oil consumption: this has been a huge mystery for us. Synthetic oil seems to be consumed much more rapidly in our vehicle. We have to add at least a quart, once it was three courts of synthetic, between regular oil changes. Here is a site that addresses this problem. Scroll down the page and it's on the left: www.performancempg.com/lubricationnews1.htm

A mechanic at an auto repair shop pulled the PO442 for me, but in order to tell me what it meant he had to use another computer device or something and he was very busy with other customers at that time. I just haven't gone back yet...

P0442 is for a small leak in the EVAP system.
With your complaint of a fuel leak/smell and the code, I would say that the most likey cause is the fuel module seal is leaking on the top of the tank...proper diagnostics will verify that fact.
