Man I think I really messed up this time. Let me take you back about a month and a half ago, when i realized it had been a while since I even CHECKED my oil level. So I check it and its low. So I throw in a quart since I'm at work and its all I have with me.
Now we jump 2 weeks forward in time to the "slight burning smell" when i realize after opening the hood to my Toyota T-100, that I accidentally left the oil filler cap OFF! .. .. The engine is somewhat splattered with oil and slightly cooked on. This brings me to the problem. If i run the vehicle for more than 20 mins at a time - the next startup will most definitley come with a puff of white smoke out of the tail pipe. From what i hear this could be due to the o-rings might have been damaged or something and after the engine is ran for any period of time the oil is seeping past them and accumulates and on next startup is burned off creating this smoke. I have also heard that this problem ( even if i get it "fixed" ) may NEVER go away. I really don't trust any shops around me for a truthfull response to this problem. I fear it will only continue no matter what I do and no matter how much I spend... So I find myself here in this forum looking for honest feedback like " your screwed " or " it can be fixed and won't continue to happen " ......... I will say what you all want to say so that you don't need to say it. I'm an idiot ![]() Any thoughts , comments , help , diagnoisis , etc etc are welcome and very much appreciated. 1995 Toyota T-100 DLX engine 5VZ-FE - 5 speed manual 6 cylinder 3378cc Thanks, Houseman |

the engine won't get ruined for not putting the oil cap back on, I've seen crummy Ford Tauruses run for months without the oil cap . you probably got water in the engine, change the oil and filter, and see what happens. The shop is gonna tell you it needs a rebuild without even looking at it.

Well in essence i guess you could compare what i did to simply running the engine without oil . By the time i noticed that the cap was off and could see obvious splatters of oil in the engine compartment. I was pretty much close to no oil level at all. Duno if that helps remedy the problem.. but i will replace the oil filter just in case.

The engine shouldn't be damaged unless the oil pressure light turned on. Just change the oil and the filter, I think it'll be ok...better than buying a new engine.

Oil and oil filter changed / fuel filter changed / air filter changed
things i probably needed to do anyways. Planning on putting some miles on it tommorrow so will find out if this helped or not.. thanks for the simple solution Sexybeast - hope it works. Will update if problem persists |

Time will tell........
Well I have given this plenty of time to see if the oil change/filter change etc etc would help but it did not.
So any more suggestions would be appreciated. I even added a tephlon additive to help the seals but i still get a "puff" of white smoke at startup if the vehicle was driven more than 15 miles and given time to cool b4 the next startup. I really don't want to spend hundreds to fix this but i fear that is what i will end up having to do. |

Re: I screwed up and now I need advice.
if your engine is fitted with a breather tube from the rocker box ,check all breather pipes for blockage, and also ckeck inside rocker cover for breather baffles excessivley wide.

Re: I screwed up and now I need advice.
if you are getting the smoke mainly on morning start up and when the engine has cooled for a while your problem is valve seals. i have replaced lots of them. you might want to pull your valve cover and see if the engine is sludged also.

is it WHITE smoke or BLUE smoke????
White smoke is steam caused by water in the engine or exhaust. BLUE smoke is oil burning. I don't think you did any damage to the motor. as long as oil still showed up on the dip stick, and the low oil pressure indicator came on, you should be fine. oil splattering out from the oil filler hole while the cap off is normal. the oil splatters around in the head and it is quite possible for it to make its way out of the open hole. if you screwed up the rings you would se BLUE smoke during startup, during hard acceleration, and after letting off the throttle. pretty much all the time. white smoke after startup means you might have condensation in the exhaust system. |
