Exhaust Tips

I have a 2002 SF 2.2 with a y-tailpipe. It comes out of the muffler for about 2 inches and then splits into a Y for about 6 inches, angled down. It looks cruddy, but I dont have the $100+ to spend on a new muffler, let alone way more for a cat-back, plus even more to get it installed. I was thinking of getting a chrome rolled tip, they are way cheaper (like $10), but wondered if it would screw anything up to cut off the Y with a hacksaw and then attach a tip to that 2" stub of a tailpipe? I dont want to attach 2 tips to the angled Y, I think that would look lame, anyone have any opinions?
