Hello to All!!

My name is Ken Heinold..... I live in central Illinois with my wife of 40yrs., Kay..... I am retired going on (9yrs.) from an earth moving manuf. company called Caterpillar Inc.... I have been interested in cars and trucks all my life and have been building model cars and trucks since the early '50s.....I had a mail order business on the side about 20yrs. ago called "Ken's Customs", where I sold pieced out parts from model car kits...... I still use the company name today, but I now customize and sell plastic models and do some work with "Hot Wheels" also...... What I am into most at the present time (when I'm not working on my backyard ponds), is making models of dream cars or concept cars from pictures or just from ideas......I carve out the masters from automotive sculpture clay, then pour rubber molds over the clay, then pour plastic into the molds until they cure......Then on to the finishing...sand, primer, paint, polish...etc. etc........Lots of fun..... I joined this forum to gain knowledge and to brush up on the latest techniques that are "out there".........Any tips would be appreciated.....

Thank you,
Modelmantru

Re: Hello to All!!

Welcome aboard!

I'm looking forward to seeing some of your custom made exotics... since you make molds of them, do you sell unfinished kits?

If you're here to find advice on the fabrication end of things, you may have a hard time finding it (unless you talk to some of the resin casters here). However, if you're looking for finishing tips, ie tips that can be applied to the store bought kits (Tamiya, Revell, Fujimi, etc) you're in for a real treat. This place has raised my standards a hundred fold. (Polish? Wax? What are those?)

Again, welcome aboard!

FAQ states that picture uploading is temp. down, so I guess my efforts to try and put some pics. on would be to no avail.......I am a one horse operation, so my sale of models is limited most of the time to custom orders..... This is new to me as I have never made a Tamiya or Fujimi kit before.....just the U.S. manuf. I've see some really nice models out there already......some good tips and advise also......will keep watching.......

Thanks

Hello again,

I'm not sure if this will work or not, but I'll try to put some pictures on for you to see......This is a model I did from a picture.. The husband wanted to surprise his wife with a model of the car her dad had completly rebuild several years ago.... Her dad died about 2yrs ago, and she thought her mother would sell the car and she would not see it again......The pictures are not too good as I do not have a digital camera...... I was not as pleased with the results as I might have been, given the short amount of time I had to complete it......I guess I am too much of a perfectionist!!!! Anyway it made them happy, which was the result I wanted......

Re: Re: Hello to All!!

WOW! Very nice!

I'd like to know a little more about your techniques... my old man has a 1940 Chev... I'd love to make a replica, but it seems waaay too hard... I'll see if I can find a pic, if your interested...

EDIT: Here's the pic anyway...

Re: Hello to All!!

Mate I dont have a digital camera either. As long as your competent with the camera you have the only hassle is the wait while the films are loaded to CD.No one here seems to mind if the pics aren't perfect.Your model looks mighty fine.
