There are 1/24 diecast as well, but they wouldn't hold a candle to a plastic peer.

This car is so significant. Why Tamiya didn't jump on the Maranello is still a mystery to me. Hell, they've done everything else!

I asked the same question when I first joined this group. That has got to be one of the most beautiful new age Ferrari's made. Someone definitely needs to get on that wagon and produce one.
We can all dream though....

Well, not really...

I could see if they were going to do just the 'iconic' Ferraris: F40, F50, Enzo... I'd even include the Testarossa in that, and I can understand making the Mythos once the TR chassis and motor is tooled...

What confuses me is that they jumped into the 360 with both feet, making 3 versions straight away, while they had completely ignored the 328, 348 and 355. Surely they thought the 355 was significant, too?

But Tamiya had never done any of the 'entry level' 3 series cars till the 360.
I really expected Tamiya to do a 512 tr or better yet a F512M.

I do think sales of the current Tamiya Ferrari's will pave the way for more of the marque to find its way into Tamiya's line.

I think all the nonsense regarding Ferrari licensing and Mattel was around the time the Maranello was launched so perhaps they decided not to throw all their money into it.

Licensing fee isn't really big issue for Tamiya. It's the market, that keeps shrinking. Hard core modeler's may think that the 550 might sell, but considering the fact that Aoshima and Fujimi's street and vip cars outsell Tamiya's highly detailed sports and race car kits, I doubt it. Why so? I don't know.

What? You all haven't built this one yet?

Okay, the truth...Before you get all hyped up, this is a photoshop phony done by one of my more evil-minded best friends as a joke. It was many, many months before the truth was revealed. I'll get 'em eventually...
Our only 1/24th Maranello choices are so-so diecasts by Maisto and Burago. Maisto has better lines and wheels, Burago's has more details including engine. Kitbash and work hard, and nobody will know it's metal. I've seen it done by a local talent. I'm still holding out for plastic...

Jay, point taken. They also did not do the beautiful 288 GTO, which to this day is one of my all time favorite cars, period.

Let's take a look at who did what 1980s to date prancing horses in 1/24 (not a complete list but as complete as I can get it for being dog tired!):

365GT4/BB - Eidai/Grip, Revell (ex-Eidai/Grip, modified), Nichimo
512BB - Tokyo Marui, MPC, Nitto/Entex/ESCI/AMT
Testarossa - Tamiya, Monogram, Italeri
512TR - Monogram, Rosso, Italeri
288 GTO - Italeri, Fujimi
308 GTB - Gunze Sangyo, Testors (Gunze?), Monogram, Revell
308 GTS - Revell (Magnum PI)
328 GTB - Hasegawa
328 GTS - Hasegawa
348 GTB - Fujimi, Italeri
348 GTS - Italeri
456GT - none!
F40 - Italeri, Protar, Tamiya, Revell (Italeri)
F50 - Revell, Tamiya, Lee (Tamiya clone?)
F512M - none!
550 Maranello - none!
F355 - none!
F575 - none!
360 Modena Coupe - Revell, Tamiya
360 Modena Spyder - Revell, Tamiya
Enzo - Revell, Tamiya

I also think the 456GT was another missed opportunity. Beautiful car. Bburago's diecast is so-so. Rather have plastic.

Chris, at the time, there was also a pretty hefty "spat" going on between Tamiya and Ferrari, partially due to Mattel's licensing policies. I remember distinctly Tamiya actually making a public announcement that due to the "unfair licensing policies" they would no longer produce any models of Ferrari products, and if modelers wanted any of the currently available ones they better snap them up quick.

Ferrari amended their licensing practices, of course, and Tamiya rescinded their edict, but believe me, they were dead serious at the time.

But what a kit a Tamiya Maranello would have been...!
