Talking Another fun night.. Yay!

So after a few hours of chilling at a bowling alley, my buddy finally agree's to gimme a run.

Big Billy's car: 69 Camaro with a 355(mild cam, stock heads, 9:1 CR, with a bit too optimistic 375hp claim), th350 with a stage 1 shift kit and something like a 2800rpm stall convertor, stock 6cyl open diff rear end, beefy BFGoodrich 255 rear tires, headers to flowmasters with turn downs, fiberglass hood and trunk, and a few other assorted items I can't really remember right now.

First race is from a dig... I rev to about 2300rpm and just dump the clutch a bit slow, and he jumps a car right from the start. I get a small bit of wheel spin, bang to second and cut his lead down to 1/2 a car. Shift to third, lose some ground while shifting, then we stay even till about 80 or so mph where he's about a car and a half when we let off....

I'd like to blame my shitty no name brand mis-matched 225's for my crappy launch, but my slow reaction and poor skill probaly played a role in it too.. hehe..

Second race... 25mph punch.. meaning I'm in second gear at around 2300rpm... I honk three times, hear him hit it, and I hit it. I jump ahead a little so that his front bumper is at my door panel, shift to third and we stay even till 70ish mph...

Third: 30mph punch.. I hit it right after the third honk, and end up staying a car ahead of him by 80mph.

4th time around. 40mph punch, but I accidently left it in 3rd gear so Billy stayed a car and a half infront of me untill 90mph.

Mass fun and excitment. He surprised me with how quick his car was.. I guess it's because his car doesn't feel fast when he gets on it... seems to lack bottom end.. I guess it's his 2.73 rear gears. I can't wait to bump up the timing and get some shorty headers up in that heeeezy!

Anywho... Yeah obviously he isnt making the 375hp claim. Cause if he's running the open rearend with stock gears. It would just roast the tires with 375hp. Especially if he's launching it on the converter at beginning of the torque curve...

I think he's lucky if he's got 275-300hp.

Not really a common thing.. but to give a piece of pipe that does nothing other than deflect sound down and away from the vehicle... a name. Just seems dumb to me.

I hardly think it should be considered a 'mod'.

Call me weird or stupid.. but I find it silly.

If you haven't done yours I think you need to get some better rear-gears. you have maybe 3.08 at best. Get some 3.73 and it won't be a close race anymore. Just a suggestion

Ah.. Already got the 3.73's.. Do gears really play a role in a race from a roll??

Yes... they'll help you accelerate to your top speed quicker... of course if they're too steep they'll hender you and not let you go as fast as you used to.

so true...

a taller gear will help you put the power down quicker...

b/c you're running say, 3k rpm at the motor, which, by the time it gets to the wheels with 3.73's, let say, (and i know i'm way off) 3400rpm. so, if you go with a taller gear, which converts the power a little better, you'll be spinning the rear tires at 4000rpm, at the same engine speed...

it's a bad analogy, and it's not scientific, but it makes sense...

it's like first gear, which is steeper than your other gears...

stomp on it in first from 1500rpm.
now stomp on it in 3rd from 1500rpm.

doing it in third is like the 3.73, and doing it in first is like a steeper, say, 4.11 gear.

get it?

the downside is that the taller gears kill your topend... that's why you put ultra low gears in "top speed" cars like bonneville cars... b/c they may take longer to put the power down, but they can get you going faster in the top end...

ramble ends here...
