tranmission problem

I have a problem with my 1996 accord automatic transmission. I was driving my car the other day and the engine light came on. I was thinking i'll take it home and look at it. That never happen though. My transmission took a crap on me first. My gears seems not to be switching. At first it did a little bit but when barely made it home, the car doesn't seem to want to get even into none of the gears not even in reverse. My question is to all the gearheads out there if you guys know the slightest idea is to why my doing that. Any feed back would be helpful thanks.

How old is your transmission? I have the same year Accord, and I can feel that my transmission is definitely going soon. I have heard that Honda's automatics aren't the best around, life-wise, because they make them too smooth or something...a friend told me this awhile ago so I don't know how valid it is. I'll look into it more if I can.

Yea my trans came with the car so its a good 6 years old. I neutral dropped about 50 times i think maybe more, naw just kiddin. The funny thing is that if my car is cold my transmission work fine. But as soon as it get hot it doesn't work, funny huh. I don't have a clue to what it could be. I was thinking about having someone rebuilding the trans but I don't know if its worth it. What do you guys think?

check you linkages and then make sure your tranny fluid is good and at the proper level(although its probably too late for that to make a difference now)

I was thinking the same thing. But I may want a manual too....I don't know. I saw a rebuild kit for under 200, but I cannot find the link. It was an advertisement on Howstuffworks.com. But I lost it. There are also some that make shift kits for automatics, but I think those are mostly for the big V8s. Anyway, if you rebuild it, you should get a good torque converter as well. Some companies make aftermarket ones for Accords. Hard to find, but they are out there. And...if you have the money, go with a manual...or sell the automatic and buy an Accord with a manual already in there. You've got a few options, so you should just research and price check....at the very least get it checked out by a Honda dealer.
