1990 325i slips out of 1st gear
I recently purchased a 1990 BMW 325i 5-speed...and I have been driving it for a few days now and it occasionally slips out of first gear...at first, it kind of startled me...I was in the process of making a left turn with oncoming traffic and it slipped so I had to regroup and get it back in gear and complete my turn. This kinda made me think of the possibility of getting into accident...I want to know if the problem is with the clutch or should I simply change out the shifter????? Getting into each gear is also burden, as it takes quite an effort at times to stick it into gear, whether it be 1st or second or 3rd....this is my first BMW and my first car I have ever got pre-1996....should I be aware of any potential problems down the line........

Sounds to me like your linkage is out of adjustment. This shouldn't be too expensive to fix. Any half assed shop should be able to fix this.

I agree with slutty. (Whoa, theres a sentence I never thought i would ever say). CHeck the linkage. Also, might want to change the tranny oil, that might help the difficulties shifting into each gear. Use Redline MTF from turner mototrsport.

sounds like a worn gear to me or a jammed inter lock ball not gripping the selector rod, no choice but to open'er up and rebuild, but do what the other guys said first

Hi, I hope you all had a merry Xmas...
I have a "little" hopefully not big problem with my 316i 1992 4 speed auto, it slips out of gear 1st and reverse but only when the transmission is cold, when it slips out i leave it in Drive then give it a little throttle and it engages again. The first thing i did was to top up the levels using the correct fluid, but being a stoner i had it all over me & ended up changing the oil rather than topping it up! i didn't do the filter in the transmission, as the auto system works on pressure kind of ??....But it still slips. If anyone can help me that would be great, thanks in advance

Hmm,
A manual transmission spipping out of gear is a big deal.
It is a sign of a bad syncronizer. The syncronizer serves two purposes. 1. It sets the gears to the same speed to allow shifting. 2. It retains the gear selected. To correct a bad syncronizer is not a DIY. Sorry, Later,
