Question 1992 2.3L Ranger problems under 3000 rpm

My 1992 Ranger starts real rough like its choking on fuel or air and the engine light might come on .Once I make it through that for about 45 seconds it later runs fine and smooth in Idle.If I cant get it to start up I must hold down on the gas pedal all the way.Like I said before wants it gets going it idles fine and smooth but all I have to do is tap the gas and it wants to die on me.If I gently push down and surge the Rpms slowly to about 2500 to 3000 rpm and stomp on the gas pedal it wont stall and shows no lack of power. So it seems anything below 3000 rpm and it chokes and dies wether I tap the gas or stomp it.I'm guessing its an air intake problem and not fuel because its fine getting fuel after 3000 rpm . Someone mentioned Oxygen sensor.Anybody have suggestions??

you should definitely take it to a ford dealer and hace them run it through one of their diagnostic systems. it almost sounds like your fms (fuel management system) is choking your throttle and restricting fuel flow. you know on a weedwacker you have to engage a choke to keep the spindle from spinning too fast while you're picking it up, and keep everything balanced? well, it's sort of like that, but it could also be your oxygen sensor, that would do it too. if you don't have enough air getting to the engine in the lower rpms, and then in the higher ones it comes to life, it sounds like you've got something in your intake system that needs to get knocked loose by the vacuum created by revving the engine. bottom line, whatever it is, if you take it to the dealer (remember to stay with the mechanic when he takes your truck back so they don't pull something over on you) and have them run a diagnostic cuz they'll be able to pinpoint it real quick. hope this helps.

your local punker...

Make sure that you have the air cleaner on and all of the tubing for the air intake.

One day I put new plugs and wires on my truck and I was going to start it up and it would not start. My first thought was "oh crap, there is a problem with the plugs and wires?" Nope. The problem was that i didn't put all the air intake back on (lazy me) and when I put it back on and tried again it ran perfect!

Given this, maybe it is a sensor that is bad. I'm not a master mechanic, but have a general theory on automotive engines.

good luck with your truck..

(hey I'm a poet and I know it!)
