high-speed, high-power diesels
Would anyone be able to point me to some high quality info in regard to high-speed, high-power output, small displacement diesels? Diesels used for racing, as in Europe, would be an example of what I'm interested in. Total displacement in the neighborhood of 1.8L is preferred. I'd like to find displacement, number of cylinders, rated speed, and rated power for a variety of engines of the type(s) described above. I'd prefer english-language websites, but I can struggle through other languages if needed.

I can't help you much, but Mercedes has a sports car... I think it's the C30 CDI, with a 5-cyl 3.0L diesel.
That's all the help I can give. ![]() BTW, it has 231hp.

I think VW had a Golf with turbodiesel in rally, but I don't think that engine gave so much power. There was also talk about a Le Mans racer with a turbodiesel.
But the real powerful ones are probably not found if you don't look at tractorpulling where two or three-way turbocharging is used. But most of those engines are larger than 1.8L |

There are people that have tuned that 1.9L VW engine for the street also, around 220 hp was the result with 2.2 bar of boost.
It seems like one must be most careful with the cylinderpressure when tuning a diesel, already some "tuningchips" are over the safe limit. |

Yeah, peak cylinder pressure can be a problem. If you swap cams, put on a viscous (oil) crank damper, change your injection timing curve, and run the engine to a higher rpm, you can get 3x the power out of some diesel engines with little or no bottom-end modification. They may smoke a little though, and fuel economy goes down considerably. 180-190 bar seems to be about as high as most people like to go on peak cylinder pressure. You can run 75psi (5 bar) boost w/o exceeding that PCP if you watch your fueling curve and drop your compression ratio. Cold starting begins to be a problem with a low CR...
