I recently went to auto zone and had them do the diagnosis thing for my enginelight being on. The guy was not knowledgeable at all, so he printed me out these receipts but couldnt explain what any of it meant. 1. Transmission component slipping? 2. Throttle position sensor? 3. Cyliner misfire #6? And lastly heater condition heatedoxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2? I have no idea what any of it means, if it is something that needs to be taken care of immedietly and if its expensive to get it done. AMY ANSWERS TO ANY OF THOSE QUESTIONS WILL BE A GREAT HELP!!!

Re: Trying to figure out what codes mean for 97 grand prix service engine light!!!
Welcome to AF!!
The transmission component slipping indicates that you have an internal problem in the transmission. The first thing to do is check to see if the fluid level is correct. Usually slipping is simply due to a low fluid level. If the fluid is OK have it checked at a transmission shop. Just don't allow them to talk you into a transmission flush as that will cause more problems. Second the throttle position sensor is probably going bad and may need to be replaced. Usually they are indexed and can be easily changed but if you don't know how then take it to a mechanic. Cylinder #6 misfire is code P0306 and indicates that the #6 cylinder on the engine is misfiring. This can be fixed by changing the plug or plug wire or both. It can be due to a bad fuel injector but the plug and wire change are the easiest way to address the issue. Finally the last one concerns the oxygen sensor that is located in front of the catalytic converter. It is on the downpipe behind the engine. This controls the amount of fuel that goes into the engine based on calculations from the computer. It isn't hard or expensive to replace just a little hard to get to. I hope this helps you out. If you are not mechanically inclined I suggest you take the car to a mechanic to have it repaired. |

Re: Trying to figure out what codes mean for 97 grand prix service engine light!!!
These are four different problems......I doubt that they all happened at the same time......seems like you have had this light on for some time, and the problems just accumulated...
The first is an internal transmission problem..... The second really is unknown......we know it's in the TPS CIRCUIT....could be the TPS.....could also be a broken wire in the harness.....a bad connection in the harness connector.....bad PCM or need for a reflash.... Cyl #6 misfire? Can sometimes be a problem with the mating cylinder, which in this case is #3....could be a compression problem, fouled/bad plug, bad wire, bad coil, bad injector, vac leak, etc. Finally, knowing GTP Dad, think he misread your post....bank 1 sensor 2, is the O2 sensor after the cat....and from the description, it sounds like the tech was talking about the heater circuit to the sensor.....could be the sensor, the harness, or a fuse..... |

Tech II you are correct I misread the post the sensor in question is the one behind the cat not in front as I mentioned.

To the OP, Posting the actual PXXX codes that printed would help immensely in assisting you, do you still have them?
