Pressure test heater core

I intend to pressure test my heater core in place to confirm a leak before tearing in to my dash. I have read that we should not test the core at the full pressure cap rating because the core may get damaged. I have read 5-8 pounds max. Any guidance is appreciated.

You can not believe all you read.
Let some of it go in one ear and out the other
Test it at full pressure cap pressure.
Around 17-18 lbs is safe to test.
The heater core is always under full rad pressure or what ever pressure the cooling system is running at.

Do you suggest a pressure system test pump set up or air compressor as the source for pressure? Got any suggestions on a rig to get me from compressor or pressure tester to the heater core pipes?

Most parts places will loan or rent you a pressure tester.

But if you have a air compresser and a air pressure regulator with pressure gauge you can T the pressure regulator into the heater hose or small water hose.
