brake pedal feels like a ton of bricks

hello: when applying brake pedal i must stand on the pedal to get any brakes , on my 1981 chevy caprice...

the pedal is super stiff ...

checked vacuum , nice and strong ...

heard changing the brake booster , is a pain in the butt

usually the brake booster has a leak when depressing the brake pedal ..with a carb engine at idle in gear depress and release the brakes see if the idle goes wacky...if so its the booster..also make sure the vacuum line to the booster and the rubber fitting on the booster holds the vac line secure and NO leaks..

I did one on this type vehicle a few years back not too hard..

get a repair manual and take your time its about 1 hour of work ..no brake fluid to mess with just some hardware and the connection to the brake pedal..
