99 Explorer Timing Chain...help??

I have a 99 Explorer 4.0 OHV with 145,000 miles on it. Lately, I have heard what sounds like a rattle coming from the timing chain area. I had our mechanic take a look at it and says the timing chain needed to be replaced. Estimated cost was $1000. Question is, how long can I let it go? Can I go 2 more months? What are the consequences if I do? I was un-aware that timing chains needed replacement.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 99 Explorer Timing Chain...help??

as far as i no the 4.0l is a free spinner most fords are(wont bend valves)
& probably jump a tooth on chain first.(hard start, misfire back fire ect)
double check 1st.
but if thats the case your only problem is walking from where ever your are
may buy alot of time, $1000 these days is alot of cash
