timing chain help

I have 89 g20 van with about 180k miles on it,and im sure it never had the timing chain change before.most of my work on my van i can do myself. like trans change but i need to know what special steps i have to take{lining up the chain etc,} since this is my first chain job.

Why do you need to change the chain? Did it break?
