S-10 pickup, reverse will not engage
We've got a 99 S10 pickup, automatic transmission. Today during an outing with family, suddenly the vehicle wouldn't go in reverse and seemed a bit hard shifting through the first two gears.
When attempting to put in reverse, it behaves just as if it is in neutral. The engine RPMs do not increase--if anything, it idles a bit more slowly, just like it does when shifted into neutral. Obviously this is some sort of transmission problem, but I'm not sure how major or minor it would be. I was hoping maybe just the shifter had come loose, but then again it wouldn't be going rough into the first few gears when driven, I don't believe, and it wouldn't go into all the other gears just fine, either. I have a feeling that whatever it is was probably caused by rough handling, as my husband--the primary driver, and the driver today, sadly I wasn't there to witness the breaking--is NOTORIOUS for not allowing any vehicle to come to a full stop before slamming it into the opposite gear, no matter how many times I've warned him about just this very thing happening. |

Re: S-10 pickup, reverse will not engage
No Reverse is bad news.
It is a internal transmission problem. Time for a rebuild or rebuilt or replacement transmission. PS Give the husband some driving training when it is fixed or he may break the new one. Good luck

Re: S-10 pickup, reverse will not engage
a little roll going from r to D isnt nearly as bad as rolling forward when you shift to R.... that may be what happened. or worse yet into park while rolling.
Personally i always stop all the way, I laugh at my neighbor because they do this all the time and now it clunks when they do it

Re: S-10 pickup, reverse will not engage
Try some sea-foam trans tune, the reverse check ball may be stuck with metal. It happened on my 4EL60-E transmission. It was still doomed but it gave me time to find a transmission.

slick-50 also makes some stuff that is almost like a red jelly... takes about 20 mins for the bottle to completely flow into the dipstick/filler. helped the trans in my 88 suburban tremendously... enough for me to drive it another 2 years and sell it anyways...
