New Ignition

Well, a couple weeks ago I had the unfortunate event of breaking a pen off in my ignition, yes a pen. I was in a drunken stupor and had the bright idea that i could start my car, well it didn't work too well.

I ordered a whole new ignition switch, not just the part that you put the key in.

From the looks of the new ignition, I need to take everything off the steering column just to unbolt the old one. Is this correct, or is there another alternative? And if this is correct, what needs to come off to get to it.

Thank you

Re: New Ignition

The common mode for replacing the ignition switch is to take the steering wheel off and disconnect the multifunction switch and take it off. There is an easier way. Take the U clamp off the steering column and drop it down. Then, take the three multi-function switch connectors and disconnect them. Remove the screw that connects the multi-function switch to the steering column. Pry up the tab that secures the switch harness retainer to the bracket on either side. Pull the retainers off the brackets. Take the multi-function switch off of the steering column.

Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
Remove the switch mounting screws and take the switch off.

Re: New Ignition

Ok, thanks Dave. I was hoping another way was possible, but they both sound like the same amount of work but, it will be a learning experience.

What is the keeper pin? I already pulled the new keys out of the ignition and it goes back in but, I didn't install it yet.

Re: New Ignition

I think the keeper pin holds the tumblers back in the lock until you get it installed.
