Modeling equipment list
Hey,
I saw the equipment list in the FAQ and it has a big lack of tools, so I thought maybe we can make a new and clear list to make an easier time for the beginners and everyone that might need this information. Please post only things that haven't been posted yet, and do not be too specific about things, do not say for example: 800 grit paper. Say in this way for example: Putty, primer and so on. Please add what kind of things every tool can be used for, and a picture if possible. Current equipment in the list (will be updated every new post for easy usage) : Model building tools (* beginner, **Normal builder, ***Experience builder, ****Scratch building tools) : ***Putty **Primer **Carving tools *Glue (clear, super and so on...) **Toothpicks (to paint buttons and tiny spots) **Ruler *Tweezers ***Masking tape ***Decal solvent ***Wax **Brush paint ***An assortment of brushes (sizes, some for enamels, some for acrylics, etc). ***An assortment of brushes - (sizes, some for enamels, some for acrylics, etc). ***An assortment of putties (2 part "hard" putties for forming things, other softer putties for finishing). *An assortment of glue (Clear parts glue. Krazy/super/CA glue. General modeling glue. Extra Thin Glue). ****Aluminum Tubing (for exhausts, etc). **An assortment of sandpaper. **Skewer sticks (for holding parts, stirring paint, etc). **Sanding files. **Panel markers (Even if you don't use them to do panel lines, they're great for writing on the plastic). ***Microsol ***Microset ***Bare Metal Foil ***Polishing kit **Rubbing Compound *Light *Magnifier **Liquid Mask **Cutting/measuring mat **Acrylic paint. **Paint brush (1 should be enough) **Bondo **Pin Vice ****BBQ Lighter *Wire Cutters **Various grit sand paper ***Craftsman dremmel *PATIENCE (not available in stores). ***Add Food Dehydrator (for speeding up paint process) ***Airbrush (for custom paints) ***Dremel ***Eye protection when using Dremel (VERY IMPORTANT) **Dial Caliper (for accurate measureing) ***White cotton gloves (for handling chrome and painted parts) ***Jeweler's pliers (curved) ***knife set **Clothespins ***Soft-bristled Toothbrush ***Brake fluid for stripping paint ***Beading wire ***Styrene sheet/ rod/ hexagonal ***Small saw ***Pin Vice Internet sources: -An account at AutomotiveForums.com -eBay (best source for 1:1 pictures--people selling cars tend to take many detailed pictures of any angle a modeler will need) -Tamiya (Great model maker) Model photography tools: -Digital camera/regular camera (with macro). Please post the equipment you are using (read other posts before posting to not post the same thing twice). Thanks. Last edited by Ran; 12-15-2004 at 02:06 AM. |

Re: Modeling equipment list
An assortment of brushes - sizes, some for enamels, some for acrylics, etc. etc.
An assortment of paint. For car modelling, Flat Black, Gloss Black, and Aluminum are critical. An assortment of putties. 2 part "hard" putties for forming things, other softer putties for finishing. An assortment of glue. Clear parts glue. Krazy/super/CA glue. General modelling glue. Extra Thin Glue. Aluminum Tubing for exhausts, etc. An assortment of sandpaper. Skewer sticks for holding parts, stirring paint, etc. Sanding files. Panel markers. Even if you don't use them to do panel lines, they're great for writing on the plastic. Many, many more things. I'm trying to think of what I all have in my toolkit and box of bigger things. EDIT: Add to that Microsol Microset Bare Metal Foil

Re: Modeling equipment list
"Stuff."
This list is just hobby shop inventory. A real, good list would have why you need each item, and what kind of each. Ie. what kind of primer depends on what paint you're going to paint over it, or the type of putty depends on what you're using it for. This half information thread is just going to cause more frustration than good, in my opinion.

I use poster putty and skewer sticks more then any think. poster putty is great for test fitting and a billion other things like sticking parts to skewer sticks for painting. And of course sprue cutters, next most important. and q-tips are a daily tool as well. but for this thread to be of use to anyone you need to either explain what each is used for or do a beginner/ intermediate/ advanced type list. cus over the years ive spent hundreds of dollars on tools and some i use once a year. so to a newbie this list could be overwelming and they might decide they cant afford to model. so this is not a very good way of doing it.

I have a nice set of jeweler's pliers and I love them. I also have an xacto saw that I couldn't live without. And beading wire-all guages, colors etc.
And how could I leave this site off my list of crucial modeling tools? |

Thanks everyone, I have updated the first post.
willimo, I agree with you, but you have to start small at first. My futer plans for this list are to get a small description about each tool, and a picture of it. |
