malscar- Yessss! Camel Lotuses! How did I overlook the Camel Lotus? Come to think of it, that would also cover race winner for us, too!

But I think that Alcohol/Tobacco themed instead of sponsored would be better. Like Gio said, all the builds would be visually thematiclly related. I like the idea of leaving the comp wide open for everyone, but I also really like the idea of the finished builds to all be related. Take Williams's recent Bud sponsorship. Sure, they're recieving money from Budwieser, but the logo is tiny and easily missed. In a lineup with Martini Porsches, Marlboro Ferrari's, and 555 Subies, you'd be hard pressed to find the tie in on an FW27.

MPWR – and hard pressed to find a FW27 model that most can build. Seeing as Tamiya gave up with F1 since the FW24, and all we now have is the Revell 1/24 in plastic, its getting a little hard for the ones who do not delve into the expensive resin /mutli media kits.

I myself am mostly a OOB builder from Tamiya /Revell etc.. Why, as I suck at building models, but with Tamiya etc it’s basically follow by numbers.

The high end multi media kits are for the ones with REAL talent. Like wise the Tamiya plastic kits can be ripped apart and reworked into something that if you put fuel in it, it would actually run.

But no, the tobacco idea does mean you can pick up a Tamiya kit and find something easy enough and add some Marlboro decals, or even an older JPS F1 car or something. I could enter this, as I’ve got a Marlboro Ducati in progress, even got a Marlboro F1 2001 decal set from SMS kicking around somewhere.

But the new F1 kits etc with decals for tobacco etc are mostly resin etc… I wouldn’t be able to build this, I can hardly get some plastic kits together without some type of truma.. LOL

Sounds good to me as well. Would give me the opportunity to build my JPS Lotus and/or Rothmans Subaru... Or a Martini Porsche.

Sorry to say that, but the tobacco/alcohol thing is very boring to me. Nearly every race car has some of these sponsors somewhere on their body so where is the demand for a contest like this? You will only see cars you have at AF anyways, even without this contest. Not that exciting.

When i read the topic of this thread, i already thought of phantom-racers and i´m glad a few guys here did already mentioned it. This could get really interesting! Just remember Lathafummi´s Impreza DTM, Veyron´s 612GTC , kingkai is working on a very nice Carrera GT1 right now, sportracer02 made a great conversion of a MB A-class into an DTM racer once and last but not least the Mini LeMans idea GTmike spoke of.

Why should there always be a real car for reference? Why not taking the advantage of making "only" model cars to create something very new? I´m sure every AF member has a favourite car he/she always like to see racing although it never did.

Cars you see regularly on AF are all you will ever get in any contest here. The only way to get any participation in a contest is to entice people to build the kits they were going to build anyways. If you try to get people to build something else, no mattter how cool the idea may be or how many people may enthusiastically say "yeah, I'll do that!", if they weren't already going to do a build like that, they won't enter.

There seems to be a persistant belief that a building contest is a good way to entice people to build a particular type of car. It's not! How many times have we seen someone (usually a newbie) propose "Hey guys, (whatever kind of car) is coool! Lets have a contest and all build (whatever kind of car)!!"? Often enough, I'm sure. Now, how many times has this actually worked? In the last year or two, only one proposed contest actually happened- the Drag Contest was started amidst a great deal of enthusiasm, was well run, and even had sponsorship. Remember how many people actually submitted builds?

We all build to our own agendas. If it happens that some of our individual building agendas line up, than we can have a contest. Expect one completed entry for every three people that say they're going to enter at the start. If you come up with a contrived contest (no matter how cool the subject) that people were not already going to build, expect one completed entry for every ten people that say they will enter.

And that's why we always have to make our categories as broad and unrestricting as possible. You can't have a contest if no one enters....

I agree. I followed through on a contest proposed by a newbie. Had a couple of sponsors putting up some really nice prizes. By the time it was said and done. I had 4 entries out of 20 who said that they would participate. Due to the lack of entries, I opted to releive all sponsors of any obligation

Because it makes it possible to compete a bit. To show off, and maybe win some bragging rights.

I admit, it would be really cool if it would work to have mini compititions of different or unusual subjects. If six people would say, "yeah, let's all build a fantasy race car!" and those six people would actually build them, it would be great fun to see! But time and time again, it has been proven that it doesn't work. Holding a contest is not enough enticement for people to build something else.

If you really do want to see something like a small group of people building a specific and unusual type of car, try organizing a group build! Post a thread saying "I really want to buid a (whatever)- anyone else want to build one, too?" Get a group of three or five of you together- keep in contact with PMs, and update together. Exchange tips, progress, and reference material- and have fun together.

But a contest just doesn't do that.

Race winners is a great idea! Or how about cars that never finsihed a race, there are quite a few of those out there. Either category would allow for large variations in models..

What about just Martini liveried cars or just Marlboro sponsored cars? Martini were mostly Lancia, but also Porsche, Lotus F1, Ford, Jag, etc. And Marlboro has sponsored everything on this planet to get you to smoke their ciggies. Just a thought.

Martini cars are in short supply if you look at it, there aren't exactly a wealth of Martini decals on the market to use for conversions so ultimately you'd end up with a lot or repetition.
Marlboro could make for an equally bland contest.

You open it up to Tobacco advertising and you'll see everything from BAT, B&H and JPS to some even more exciting and different liveries from brands not seen in the US like Gaulois (sp) and Winfield.
