d16a6 stops making power at about 6800 so revving it to 8000 is just ruining your valve train for nothing.

He is talking about the physical internals of the engine were not desighned to rev past X chip or no chip... The ONLY way to do this SAFELY is to 1.Balance/micropolish crank and rotating asebly 2.Upgrade the valvetrain and camshafts then your computer would have to be Chiped which you already have, so as you see you still have a ways to go before you REALY make power @ X number over redline.

Couple questions.

1. I would assume the D15B1 has a rev limiter as well (fuel cutoff?). I don't have a tach but at least it would be good to know I won't blow it up unless I money shift.

2. I am guessing the D15B2 (and B1) is NOT an interference head then? In engines I am more familiar with valve float means hellooo pistons and goodbyyyye head, if you are lucky. Not lucky = cyl scaring and new engine.

TIA

1.it does have a rev limiter so you will not blow up your motor. that is as long as you're not doin anything crazy with your motor of course.

2. yes, these are interference motors and the pistons can hit the valves if there is bad valve float. but, they will not always contact and get messed up. it just depends on the severity of the situation.

hope that helps.

Haha when i had the DX motor in my Si, I was revving that sucker up to 7200 RPM everyday, sometimes I just held it there to hear that awsome sound of the rev limiter. Don't worry guys, it was a temp motor and I already took it out....never blew that beast though, it held like a mofo.

Yea, i just got through test driving my car, making sure I fixed it alright and stomped the gas to see if it would hit the rev limiter, it finally hit it around 7K. Don't worry, really didn't matter if I blew the engine or not, because I'm getting another one wednesday

Cool good to know. I really appreciate the info. I guess at least if I float these valves I'm not looking at $3500 in head work. No tach in my STD but I will just keep it below the max speeds listed in the manual per gear. Engine swap maybe someday but not now.

Thanks again.
Brad

If I ever heard of anyone having $3500 worth of headwork done on a honda I would have to bitchslap them untill the they started throwing there money at me instead! You can get a B16A1 installed for about $2000-$2200... Sooo $3500 in headwork should never be a concern! :bandit:

$3500 is about the going rate with labor after "money shifting" a S52 B32 E36 M3 engine.

Looking at around 5.5 - 6 large plus install for a new motor used.

Definitely more of a bad day! Hope (pray) it is never me.

Those are all BMW engines? Or mercedes perhaps? Anyway Im assuming when you say "Money Shift" you meen Missed Shift which would take you to X rpm and = bad news for your motor...

Actually BMW engine singular. The S52 B32 is the U.S. 3.2ltr M3 engine found in 96-99 BMW M3s.

The "Money Shift" is actually more common than most would like - especially on the 95s (first year of E36 generation M3 production). Problem is that under heavy stress, say shifting while nailing it around a curve or on the track, the tranny mounts were pretty soft (a luxury compromise - improved slightly for 96+) allowing the tranny to shift. SO where you expect 5th to be on a 4-5 shift you find 3rd. Mech over-rev and boom car dies! Hello bent valves - usually exhaust ones and you hope thats the extent. You can guess how the nickname came to be as you did above.

Also can do it if not using proper shift technique (back hand to 3, 4 and 5) and you can just miss if not paying attention (track, speed shifting, etc) with the compact spacing and hit 2nd going 3-4 or downshift looking for 5-3rd and hit 1, 5-4 and get 5-2. Lots o options. The tranny has great syncros but the downside of that is that it will let you shift into 1st at 100mph if you want.

IIRC you will bounce off the rev limited whether in neutral or in gear. Redline is just the projected max safe revs of your engine by the manufacturer. There is usally some safety margin built in which is why you see aftermarket chips bumping it up. More revs but slightly more risk.

Rev limits may or may not kick in right at redline depends on how it is set up and is usually a fuel cut-off of some type. Thus the reason it doesn't help you when you mechanically over-rev the car.

Hope that helps.
