first of all as redneck pointed out the f-14 does not go from 0-170 in 1 sec not even with the catapult second i would like to know what compressor trim did that turbo had on your BMW?

Re: Camaro Kills Girly Eclipse
Well i have books that prove what im saying about hte F-14 Tomcat. ie The Encyclopedia Of Modern Warplanes/ Bill Gunston Pg. 131 middle of the page.
And as for the BMW i will have to let you know about that. The turbo was installed before i bought it. Engine was dead as well. Just did the fabrication of the intake manifold and exhaust manifold, and other ods and ends. I will hopefullt be baroughing my brother in lawys digital cam. ill try to get a good pic of the turbo and the stampings on the side. Ill poste pics as soon as i have em. |

really cuz this says differently http://science.howstuffworks.com/aircraft-carrier4.htm "This totally steam-driven system can rocket a 45,000-pound plane from 0 to 165 miles per hour in two seconds! (a 20,000-kg plane from 0 to 266 kph)" and so does this: http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita.../cv-design.htm "A steam-powered catapult accelerates an aircraft under full throttle, from 0 to 165 mph in 2 seconds during take-off to help it reach take-off speed" and again http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_carrier "A steam-powered catapult accelerates an aircraft under full throttle, from 0 to 165 mph in 2 seconds during take-off to help it reach take-off speed." getting the picture? and don't say that there is little difference between 1 sec and 2 since its twice the acceleration.

Re: Camaro Kills Girly Eclipse
Actually, as for how quickly a Tomcat accelerates on launch from a carrier I cannot comment, and honestly ain't all that concerned about. But, when someone mentioned earlier that Tomcats do not always take off at full military power he is correct. Let me explain.
The original F-14A was kind of underpowered for such a big aircraft. Fully loaded out that aircraft is a heavy mother and had to take off at full military power (in afterburner) The problem with this is afterburning uses a LOT of fuel in a very short amount of time. There are two problems with a carrier plane taking off in full burner. Jet fuel is not cheap and is in limited supply onboard ship ...period, so they like it when you spend less at the pump. But mainly, the biggest problem is it reduced loiter time when the Tomcat was running CAP, and essentially acting as the only real point of defense between the carrier and a cruise missile attack from soviet bombers (You know, that thing Tomcat pilots did when they were trying to keep the Soviets from slamming a few cruise missiles into a Nimitz class) In that instance the Tomcat that took off in full burner is either a:Going to have to join up and mid air refuel much quicker than with no burner on takeoff or b: return to the carrier much quicker. As Tomcats truly are the defender of the fleet and Tomcats and JP are both very limited quantites onboard a carrier assuming the onset of hostilities. Anything that keeps the Cats in the air longer doing their job defending the fleet, AND saves jet fuel is worth it's weight in gold to the Navy. When the Tomcat got the engine upgrade in the B and later D models, the performance of the airplane improved greatly. And, afterburner was simply no longer necessary upon takeoff, which was stated as one of the major benefits and reasons for the engine upgrade in the first place. So no, the big Cats most definately do not always take off under full military power, and it would not make sense to do so. Just a far off topic FYI. |
