400hp Camaro kill, and instant tuning results

So me and two other DSM-heads are driving on this LONG stretch of highway near my house at about 2 or 3am. I'm doing the basic 3rd gear 30-100mph pull and we're logging and tuning using DSMLink. We've made some progress and finally I turn up the boost to 20psi. We begin tuning for this.

I made the 3rd gear pull and I start to brake down to normal speeds. In an instant, I hear a MASSIVE rev from the left and a white LS1 camaro with what sounds at least to be a full exhaust and definitely a massive cam rev at me. He drove past me like he was going to blow me off, but then his passenger stuck his head out the window and saw my fmic, and slowed back down and asked if we wanted to run.

I told him I was tuning, and that I'd go for a 40-100 run, but if I stopped, it was because I'm running lean or knocking or whatever. He said fine. I drop it in second and he honks three times. Three honks and I floor it. I have 20psi in less than an instant, and all 3 of us are pushed into the back of our seats. But I can barely hear my car. To the left of me, this camaro is slowly inching his way past me. He shifts 3 times to my 2. O no, my first loss with the new turbo setup???

At about 100mph, he got me by a car. No shame in losing to this beast I think. So we pull over to the car. He comments on the car saying he liked it and respected us for not being ricers, heh. He mentions some mods including full exhaust, cam, and some other stuff, and mentioned he put down 400hp to the wheels at a local dyno. Impressive stuff.

I told him to let me and my friend make some changes in dsmlink and we'll run again. We lean out the upper range to about 11:1 and reduce timing where we see knock, and add timing up top along with more fuel. I asked him if he wante to go again. So we pace each other at 40.

3 honks again and we're off! To my surprise, I'm holding him off and inching away as I shift to 3rd. 20psi hit's INSTANTLY and I pull maybe a car to about 100. He throws the thumbs up and so do I.

I asked him if he wanted to run my passenger's DSM. (about 450whp, much faster than me), and he says it's late and he's going home. Too bad, his car was 2 miles down the road, with race gas in the tank

So, all in all, it was a good night (this happened a while ago), and a good show of how much tuning makes the difference. Now to get on a dyno with a wideband and get some REAL tuning!!

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Sounds like a great loss/kill. Glad the guy in the Camaro was cool about it too. Those LS1's with cams sound AMAZING, I love hearing them go. Again, great runs!!

Re: 400hp Camaro kill, and instant tuning results

Good story and even better kill.

How are you tuning your A/F ratio on the street without some kind of wideband? 11:1 is lean for a DSM? Or are you trying to be conservative? Are you pushing 20psi on pump (91 or 93) gas?

Nice kill. I really wonder how much hp you're going to make. 300+, right? Are you going to turn the boost up as well?

Re: 400hp Camaro kill, and instant tuning results

Thanks for the compliments guys.

"How are you tuning your A/F ratio on the street without some kind of wideband? 11:1 is lean for a DSM? Or are you trying to be conservative? Are you pushing 20psi on pump (91 or 93) gas?"

DSMLink tells my my A/F ratio. It is usually within .1 or .2 as long as there are no major boost leaks or problems with fuel delivery. I'll give in and buy the wideband kit eventually. 11:1 is relatively lean for DSM's. Considering the stock is around 9:1. I was tuning with pump gas (93), because the car will RARELY see race gas. I didn't want a race gas dependent car, so the turbo responds very well to pump gas. With race gas, I would push it to 11.5:1, but that's it. I tune for NO knock. I get less than 1 degree of knock retard throughout the rpm range. I'm pretty conservative because this is my daily. Once I get a new daily, I'll go crazy with this car, and really push it, then just buy a stroker .

HP is still an unknown yet, I'll get a dyno-tune soon. I DO know that I'm flowing ~34-35 pounds of air which is easily 300+. I'll get it on the dyno and see for real though. However, this turbo has been known to hit ~44 pounds of air, I need cams and an intake manifold to get up there.

My biggest power-killer right now is that I'm dealing with 100+ degree outside temperature. It's killing my airflow. O well, I'll take my no emissions testing over cool air I guess.

Ever think of throwing a water injection kit on there?

I'm still learning about the various types of injections and their results. It's a possibility one day, but I still want a magnus and cams first.

so isnt that a loss? Im so confused. He didnt have a supercharger setup?or was it a 383 because its very hard to put 400 rwhp with a 350, unless he had a very stout cam.

I don't know what those numbers are, but I do know the cam was LUMPY as it gets, and it was NA.

I'll stick to DSM's
