97 Lumina ABS Light On

Have a 97 Lumina with 3.1 engine. ABS light stays on solid. Any idea what to look for or will a code reader give me a code? Brakes seem to function OK.

Yes, need to start with a code, several things can set the light. Post the codes. You will have normal base brakes with abs lamp on, just abs will be inop.

You need access to a scanner that is set up for abs codes.

My local AutoZone has a scanner that reads ABS codes....they do it for free.....

Basically, it will point you in the direction of a particular wheel.....all you can do is make a visual inspection.....might find a damaged harness or sensor....disconnect harness and look for water intrusion(sometimes,in this case, you will need harness and sensor).....


do you have a multimeter? If yes, you can check ohm rating of sensor, and also A/C output of the sensor when spinning the wheel....

If sensor, it's the WHOLE hub/bearing....

AZ cannot or will not do abs scans here in NYS.

On my '97 the reluctor ring is pressed onto the hub, but the sensor is separate...you'd have to take the top 2 hub bearing bolts out to replace it, but no need to replace the hub unless the reluctor is missing a tooth or something...

Update on my question. Have pulled all wheels and inspected sensors, wires, and notched wheel on hubs. Cannot detect anything wrong. Went to Auto zone and their code reader will not pull ABS codes. Went to O'Reily and they said as long as car was 1996 or newer their code reader would work. Connected code reader and it said vehicle was not equipped to for ABS codes. Tried mutiple times and got same result. Did a little more surfing on the internet and it appears that maybe there is some software that only GM dealers have to read the ABS codes. Can anyone confirm if this is true I have to go to a dealer or offer advice to for next steps to take?

Any professional high line scanner, not AZ or O'reilly's will read codes, Actron makes one about 350.00 or pay a shop for the code and diagnosis. The Snap On MTG has full ABS diagnostics also.
