How difficult - changing Thermostat 2001 cherokkee Sport 4 L Straight Six
My newly acquired 114,000 mile 2001 4 L Straight Six 4x4 Cherokee Sport runs at 210° F
according to the temperature gauge. I know I will get a lot of Flack about this, but I would like to change the Thermostat to make the engine run cooler - maybe 190° F. It will allow the engine to last longer. Yes, the efficiency will be lower - so be it. Is it a big deal to change to a different thermostat with this 2001's 4 L Straight Six ? DoctorBill

Re: How difficult - changing Thermostat 2001 cherokkee Sport 4 L Straight Six
The thermostat housing is on the upper radiator hose, i believe, on the engine side. I dont think it is difficult at all. The thermostat starts to open at 195 F. Should be fully open at around 212 F i think. There is nothing wrong with the temperature rating on the factory thermostat. The 4.0 Liter motor was a good motor as long as they are taken care of. Ive seen alot of these motors out last the vehicle they were in.

Re: How difficult - changing Thermostat 2001 cherokkee Sport 4 L Straight Six
I guess I will leave the Thermostat alone.
I asked a mechanic that I trust what he'd charge to change the thermostat. He said that with todays cars completely and totally run by the on board computer, that changing the running temp to 20 degrees lower would make the compuker go bananas and screw up the gas/air mixture. He's probably correct. So.....I'll let it go. DoctorBill
