98 neon.... timing belt???

we got the neon salvaged at 28k I used to push it to the limit alot and it started leaking oil from the head,.... the head gasket was swapped but im wondering if the timing belt got swapped too ?? i know the water pump did though,... well one day on the free way i floored the pedal and soon after like a reving noise noise is heard kinda like an after market intake when its just in park or being driven,... could a loose or faulty timing belt cause this? any suggestions? the person who swapped the head is not around... so i cant ask him if he swapped the timing belt

Go here and follow these directions:

http://www.neons.org/neontsb/diagnost.htm

If you get a code 11 I would have it checked ASAP. Never fool around with a timing belt issue. If anyone tells you the Neon has a noninterference motor, they are wrong. If your timing belt goes, kiss that motor goodbye. Chances are pretty good that if the car had only 28K miles on it when the HG got replaced, then the timing belt was not replaced. The owner's manual does say to replace at 105,000 (I checked for once ) but I always do mine every 60,000. All my past vehicles manuals have said to do it around 60K. If you have just a noise and don't notice a change in performance I doubt your timing belt is the problem.

ok it was 55 so no problems,.... I'm wondering though,... could the timing belt come loose and not skip any teeth ??? I dont know but thats where I keep thinking the noise is comming from,... the car runs fine but its just been parked in the drive way for about 6 months,.... because of that pesky noise

Check your powersteering/ac belt. Mine is needing replacement and makes a noise. If the timing belt was skipping teeth you would probably get the code and notice a difference in performance of the motor.
