timing belt
Have any of you guys changed the timing belt yet? I've got almost 107.000 miles on my X so I can't put it off any longer. Especially since I just read on another board that the Xterra has an interference engine and I will end up with bent rods and a messed up engine if the belt breaks. I'm thinking about doing the work myself and changing the water pump, thermostat and all hoses/drive belts while I'm in there. I have read some tips on other boards. Specifically, I read that the belt tensioner should also be changed. Any other tips from you guys would be appreciated. Does the timing have to be re-adjusted, or do you just have to make sure the new belt goes on exactly like the old one came off?
Is Xterraparts.com the cheapest place to get the parts? thanks, Scott |

Thanks Brent,
I read his post on the XOC board, but that post was a little more informative because of all the replys. I need to start checking out that board as it looks pretty informative. I have pretty much abandoned the old Voy board and XOC. Would it be possible for you to post or e-mail the page from the service manual that describes how to get the new belt in without changing the timing settings? I am tempted to buy my own copy of the service manual, but it cost as much as all of the other parts I need to do this job combined. |

Re: timing belt
Pay $20 for 24-hour access to www.nissan-techinfo.com, and save the PDF files.
![]() You might need launch Adobe Reader on its own, then go to Edit: Preferences: Internet and turn off "Display PDF in browser" to be able to save them, not sure. Brent |

Re: timing belt
I just installed mine last night. Pretty straight forward. If you have air tools even better. You will also need a 1 1/8 socket to take the crankshaft pullley off. I just installed the breaker bar and cranked the engine. You will also need a puller for the harmonic balancer. Allow at least 4-6 hours. it tooke me 6 hours but I changed all belts and the oil at the same time. Good luck. I recomend buying the belt from Nissan since it has the marks to match up. That is something you DO NOT want to screw up.

Re: timing belt
Very illegal, and you're putting money in the pockets of those scumbags.
If you want it cheap, exploit Nissan's own loophole yourself. Buy a one-day subscription to www.nissan-techinfo.com to view the service manual PDFs online, and just save them to your hard drive. Same thing, cost you the same money, but at least the ebay slime aren't making money off you. |
