What's the point of those "fart pipes"?

What is the point of having the muffler with the huge end on it? I see so many Eclipses, Civics, Accords, and Preludes with them on. I can understand if it is for performance reasons, I've seen them on Supras and they look fine there and don't make that much noise when just driving around. But on the others that I mentioned above, half the time I can see the exhaust tubing going into the muffler and it's a tiny 2 inch tube and the other end of the exhaust is 4-6 wide. And OMG the noise they make, I won't really get into that but...

The bigger the tip and the louder it is, the more horsepower gain you get :finger: I thought everyone understood this

j/k

Ok now for my practical answer: It is a nothing more than a big fad. Everyone wants to look cool like the cars that do need the bigger exhausts, etc. (i.e. Supra) so I guess they think if you put some similar looking parts on your car, people will think you have a fast car and get all the chicks. So they do the same in hopes that they too can drive faster and be a pimp

I thinks it's a fad just like in the 50's-60's hot rods were the thing. 70's it was the Novas and Chevelles and other big cars like that, in the 80's it was the lowrider type trucks, now in the late 90's/00's it's the sport compact thing.

ok first,I have a muffler with a big tip(4.5 in)but I agree with you
second,my car doesn't sound like a lawn mower, but it is loud
third,I got that muffler because my old one(original)was broken and I bought it from some guy really cheap.

I agree with Katwoman that it's a fad,and when I get enough money I'll probably change my exhaust to a quieter and probably smaller tiped one, eventhough I think that it kinda looks good still.
But I really hate the lawnmower sound too

While I agree it looks out of place, I dont have a problem with it. Its their car, if they want to paint it with pink and green pokadots with a periscope coming out of the roof, I dont care. I'll laugh, but I wont care.

Mod stirring shit up

My exhaust is not to big (4"). It's what I like so I bought it. I don't expect everyone to like my car and the things I've done to it.

All that matters if the person doing the mods likes it

I'm just wondering... what makes it look good to have a 2" pipe going into a 4" muffler.... It reminds me of those speakers that make the noise of a BOV but the car isn't turboed. Just like "I have a huge exhaust that makes lots of noise, now I'm fast and I intimidate people"

I'm not stirring up sh1t, that is why it is over here in the stress release section. If I was meaning to cause trouble I would have posted it really nastly in the Honda section.

I was just messing with you about stirring sh!t up. I think it adds a uniques look to the car and compliments the BIG wheels. Gives it that fast look even though my car is not fast. It will be one day and then i'll have a reason to get 3" piping

I hate the ones that sound like a swarm of gassy bumblebees!!! I mean, just because the hamster that runs to make your car go ate some beans doesn't mean I want to hear it magnified 100x!!! :silly2:

Okay, so it does bug me when people get the ones that sound like they have less HP than my snowblower.... I respect cars whose exhaust pipes (no matter how large in diameter) simply magnify the deep roar of the engine itself.

MY prob wit those big mufflers is that they are not just free flowing mufflers and that is the natural sound of the car. Cars with V8's and flowmasters are loud but that is just the natural flow of the engine. If you buy a muffler for ya important that is just free flowing that is fine, but 99% that are bought magnify the sound (like glasspacks) and that is just annoying

And an additional inverse theorem exists between the stickers on your vehicle and the size of the male "member."
