The Next Comp?

What ever you guys decide on just let me know. I will be more than happy to supply some prizes for the winners. maybe theme appropriate??
You mean smokes and booze? You're on!!! :grinyes:
malscar- Yessss! Camel Lotuses! How did I overlook the Camel Lotus? Come to think of it, that would also cover race winner for us, too!
But I think that Alcohol/Tobacco themed instead of sponsored would be better. Like Gio said, all the builds would be visually thematiclly related. I like the idea of leaving the comp wide open for everyone, but I also really like the idea of the finished builds to all be related. Take Williams's recent Bud sponsorship. Sure, they're recieving money from Budwieser, but the logo is tiny and easily missed. In a lineup with Martini Porsches, Marlboro Ferrari's, and 555 Subies, you'd be hard pressed to find the tie in on an FW27.

MPWR – and hard pressed to find a FW27 model that most can build. Seeing as Tamiya gave up with F1 since the FW24, and all we now have is the Revell 1/24 in plastic, its getting a little hard for the ones who do not delve into the expensive resin /mutli media kits.
I myself am mostly a OOB builder from Tamiya /Revell etc.. Why, as I suck at building models, but with Tamiya etc it’s basically follow by numbers.
The high end multi media kits are for the ones with REAL talent. Like wise the Tamiya plastic kits can be ripped apart and reworked into something that if you put fuel in it, it would actually run.
But no, the tobacco idea does mean you can pick up a Tamiya kit and find something easy enough and add some Marlboro decals, or even an older JPS F1 car or something. I could enter this, as I’ve got a Marlboro Ducati in progress, even got a Marlboro F1 2001 decal set from SMS kicking around somewhere.
But the new F1 kits etc with decals for tobacco etc are mostly resin etc… I wouldn’t be able to build this, I can hardly get some plastic kits together without some type of truma.. LOL

Sorry to say that, but the tobacco/alcohol thing is very boring to me. Nearly every race car has some of these sponsors somewhere on their body so where is the demand for a contest like this? You will only see cars you have at AF anyways, even without this contest. Not that exciting.
When i read the topic of this thread, i already thought of phantom-racers and i´m glad a few guys here did already mentioned it. This could get really interesting! Just remember Lathafummi´s Impreza DTM (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=505604), Veyron´s 612GTC (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=423999) , kingkai is working on a very nice Carrera GT1 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=581533) right now, sportracer02 made a great conversion of a MB A-class into an DTM racer once and last but not least the Mini LeMans idea GTmike spoke of.
Why should there always be a real car for reference? Why not taking the advantage of making "only" model cars to create something very new? :) I´m sure every AF member has a favourite car he/she always like to see racing although it never did.

Cars you see regularly on AF are all you will ever get in any contest here. The only way to get any participation in a contest is to entice people to build the kits they were going to build anyways. If you try to get people to build something else, no mattter how cool the idea may be or how many people may enthusiastically say "yeah, I'll do that!", if they weren't already going to do a build like that, they won't enter.
There seems to be a persistant belief that a building contest is a good way to entice people to build a particular type of car. It's not! :disappoin How many times have we seen someone (usually a newbie) propose "Hey guys, (whatever kind of car) is coool! Lets have a contest and all build (whatever kind of car)!!"? Often enough, I'm sure. Now, how many times has this actually worked? In the last year or two, only one proposed contest actually happened- the Drag Contest was started amidst a great deal of enthusiasm, was well run, and even had sponsorship. Remember how many people actually submitted builds?
We all build to our own agendas. If it happens that some of our individual building agendas line up, than we can have a contest. Expect one completed entry for every three people that say they're going to enter at the start. If you come up with a contrived contest (no matter how cool the subject) that people were not already going to build, expect one completed entry for every ten people that say they will enter.
And that's why we always have to make our categories as broad and unrestricting as possible. You can't have a contest if no one enters....

I agree. I followed through on a contest proposed by a newbie. Had a couple of sponsors putting up some really nice prizes. By the time it was said and done. I had 4 entries out of 20 who said that they would participate. Due to the lack of entries, I opted to releive all sponsors of any obligation

Errr, fun?
Because it makes it possible to compete a bit. To show off, and maybe win some bragging rights.
I admit, it would be really cool if it would work to have mini compititions of different or unusual subjects. If six people would say, "yeah, let's all build a fantasy race car!" and those six people would actually build them, it would be great fun to see! But time and time again, it has been proven that it doesn't work. Holding a contest is not enough enticement for people to build something else.
If you really do want to see something like a small group of people building a specific and unusual type of car, try organizing a group build! Post a thread saying "I really want to buid a (whatever)- anyone else want to build one, too?" Get a group of three or five of you together- keep in contact with PMs, and update together. Exchange tips, progress, and reference material- and have fun together.
But a contest just doesn't do that.

What about just Martini liveried cars or just Marlboro sponsored cars? Martini were mostly Lancia, but also Porsche, Lotus F1, Ford, Jag, etc. And Marlboro has sponsored everything on this planet to get you to smoke their ciggies. Just a thought.

Martini cars are in short supply if you look at it, there aren't exactly a wealth of Martini decals on the market to use for conversions so ultimately you'd end up with a lot or repetition.
Marlboro could make for an equally bland contest.
You open it up to Tobacco advertising and you'll see everything from BAT, B&H and JPS to some even more exciting and different liveries from brands not seen in the US like Gaulois (sp) and Winfield.

Most people seem to be behind the Tobacco and Alcohol idea so far. Do we need a poll or is this going to be it? There is a bit of support for other ideas like phantom cars or openwheelers but they seem to be less. And anyway if a phantom racer is your thing, then just add Jagermeister, Gitanes or similar sponsorship and you are in! :)
I've already got my entry picked - check my new Avatar. ;) Might even be a chance to revive my old Marlboro Stratos project. :D

Since we have the drugs covered maybe we should include the Sex and Rock n' Roll as well! :) If we do go with the sponsorship theme maybe we could structure the contest so phantom cars were their own category? Just to avoid any potential problems if all rolled in together. Something like:

Curbside
Phantom
Of course that is assuming we get enough entries to make three categories viable.

I would participate in any contest, unfortunately except a subject like "fantasy cars". Why? Because I only build historical subjects, trying to be as exact as possible in comparison to the real thing. Fantasy just don't fit into my range of subjects, and since I have a stockpile to do for the next 200 years or so, I'm not gonna add another subject only to be able to enter a contest. On the other hand, whenever I enter a model in a contest, I also actually FINISH it.
But of course, I'm just 1 guy alone, and if the majority wants to build fantasy cars, go ahead. Don't let my 2 cents keep you from chosing the subject that the majority wants.

Hi im new to automotive forums and i thaught of entering the next contest
I personally would like something like a private rally or race car which you designed your self whit any decals you like like an old bmw 635 with weber carborators and a roll cage and you have a rally car.
but it would be cool with tobacco cars but then you have to get decals from another kit:newbie: bye

Yeah, I would enter just about any category- except fantasy. I'm totally with Sennake on this- I have far to many great real cars I'm keen to build to get excited about something that never existed.
I would love to see a 70's theme, and I could get into open wheel, too. Smokes and booze does seem a tad contrived to me, but I'd definately enter that, too. I've got a kit picked out in my stash for just about any reasonable theme mentioned here. Maybe I'm alone in this, maybe not, but I think for choosing a category I tend pick a kit or two from the stash that I would love an excuse to start- and then vote for whatever category they'd fit into.
This year, I just have to make sure i finish something. I've learned my lesson- have the body painted before winter this year....

Hey guys: definitely don't care about fantasy, phantoms ecc: something in teh air for that: I can't say I love Andy and Sennake motivation but the good here is we're many, with may heads, so great to have different positions on the respect of others. I also have a stash impossible to do before my become to a better life but I don't care it, I follow my feel, and my feel and excitment is for a fantasy crap now: that dont mean I need a contest :grinyes::grinyes:
So I like Phil's tought: simply F1/open wheels, w/ou livery specs. Alcol tobacco could give only omogeneity: two same model is the last thing I like in a contest.

Sorry, I'm late to the party. I'm not too enthused about the Alcohol/Tobacco liveries - there aren't a lot of those cars that I'm really interested in to be honest; if anything, I'd want to do a Lucky Strike Honda, but I'm not going to get a resin kit for this contest.
I'm really interested in open wheels, I've two that need to come down and get worked on.
Perhaps it's too late to suggest, but what about race cars based on production cars? No prototypes, no Formula, just cars that came out of a factory and got reworked.

F1, indy car, sprint car, modifieds, top fuel dragsters, anything with the wheels hanging out, even midgets! But then again, we have a lot of rally and le mans type builders here....As was suggested earlier we should have a poll

i've cracked wise a couple of times, but in all seriousness, i'd suggest as broad a category as possible so it's open to the greatest number of builders. everyone's got a preference in modeling --- vintage, F1, open wheel, motorcycles, etc. --- so the chosen category ought to be broad enough for everyone.
with that in mind, how about "milestone" vehicles -- any racer that set a record (for example, Kenny Bernstein's top-fuel dragster first to break 300 mph), introduced a new era in racing (for example, the Ferrari 333SP reinvigorates IMSA), launched some revolutionary technology (Lotus 25 introduces the monocoque chassis to F1), etc...
a broad theme like that would span the history of motorsports in all its forms, thereby offering an opportunity for builders of every description.
just a thought.

Perhaps it's too late to suggest, but what about race cars based on production cars? No prototypes, no Formula, just cars that came out of a factory and got reworked.
Love it! That's my favorite idea so far. BTCC, JTCC, GT, even WRC, etc! Something you could do a road & track with, if you built the street version too. R&T would be a cool idea, but I wouldn't want to have to do two builds for one contest.

Nice idea but could get tricky. For example a modern Peugeot 307 WRC never actually rolled out of a factory as a complete car. Only as components that were completely reworked with all manner of systems that are totally divorced from a road car. Does that get included, yes you say? Rightly so.
Next how about a Brabham BMW BT50 Formula one car? No you say? Well in actual fact it's engine block is that of a road car. Not just based on one but actually drove around on public roads for tens of thousands of kilometres before being reworked into a turbocharged hand grenade.
If the 307 body parts are okay why not the stock BMW block? Okay, a long and laughable comparison but that is the sort of problem it could present.
Anyway keep the suggestions coming guys. I still think Alcohol/Tobacco, Open wheelers and maybe 70s are the best ideas so far. The winners and record breakers ideas are nice but too diverse and yet restrictive at the same time.
The more I think about it the colder I get on including fantasy cars. Without intentionally sounding elitist, it is not really what this folder in supposed to be about. I do like the idea of imagining a car that could have, but never actually existed. Like a modern LMP1 Jaguar or Porsche. But simply slapping different decals on a road car kit and calling it a touring or rally car sounds like a waste of a good kit to me.
Perhaps to keep things simple, after all the entries are in for the 80's comp, all the entrants should vote for the next comp theme. That way the builders decide!:)

Andy is this still a theme? Iguess almost ALL vehicles in motorsport section could join this wide class.

Whell I've to agree, but power to voters!

Whilst sponsorship may be mandatory for the comp (if chosen), consumption is optional.
Besides, motorsport is/was banned in Switzerland, and road car accidents kill millions. Anybody offended by that? People who can't be bothered to try and spell correctly in their posts offends me but again, what can you do?

Well I can't see any problem. I don's smoke and I drink (almost) moderate but I guess the theme would be see from a mature point: obviously we aren't supporting any alchol/tabac campaign. I could see only livery opportunity for our jobs. I guess this is logic.

The best idea yet, like many people I'm not in the contest, I hoped to enter and maybe this time it will work for me but PLEASE no poll, let the people who have entered and contributed decide this time

I still think Alcohol/Tobacco, Open wheelers and maybe 70s are the best ideas so far.
I could live with (and would enter in) any of these categories
How about spicing it up, and call the category "70s open wheelers with alcohol/tobacco sponsoring"? (That WAS a joke in case someone is wondering)...
Or how about cars that have been driven by the same driver? If you want to have a wide variety in cars Jacky Ickx would definetely by THE driver to choose : sportscars, F1, rally, rallyraid, touring, ... he has done everything!
Or yet another idea : how about making a country the subject of the contest : for instance "German cars"...
