The only way I'll do a poll is one of those jobbies that show exactly who voted and how. That way eveybody who votes for the winning theme is obliged to build an entry or be subject to public humiliation. :evillol: (unless they've got a real good excuse - like a hurricane)

I also tought a way like this to quit the trick:
1- before one declare his disponibility to join the contest,
2- vote
3- join the contest with any kind of result contempled in the poll
so we have just to find an agreement in 4/5 themes to use in the poll
I guess it isn't hard: from the mal's list we have some good themes

Iエve seen enough, already! :disappoin
Make a poll, when the 80エs contest is finished.
Let everybody vote. Since itエs an open forum, letエs donエt restrict decisions like that to the ones who actually entered one of the two contest we had.
But on the other hand, Phil, you call the shots (since youエre the one having all the work with the contests, etc.). So whatever you decide is best for the contest. Letエs just get over with this thread, it is already 10 pages too long!
Robert
With all do respect, I don't care how high up the food chain Phil is. This is a public forum and if the public dosen't have a say in the decision making then you need to change the name of the forum to "Phil's Forum" :grinno: :grinno: :grinno:
As a relitivly new member here I was not around when the 80"s contest started, so therefor I should be excluded from any part of the decision making???? that makes no sense!!!
Perhaps I should try a differant forum????

How about an International Contest of Champions?
What I mean is any car driven by ANY current OR former champion of their series.
This opens it up to F1, NASCAR, MotoGP, Drift, WRC, NHRA, ALMS, whatever type of racing floats your boat. This works well because many kits are made to honor the champion of any given series, so there is a lot to pick from.

I like Gio's idea,
people who vote are in the contest and (must) build and enter a model, whatever subject it may be.
Cheers

I still dont see why Alcohol and Tobacco is such a bad idea. It includes every single racing series and there are plenty of kits availiable on the market to build. I still think this is the best idea. I say lock this thread and call it a done deal.

Now this is just silly. Let's do something.
The problem is, some motorsport themes will be interesting to some people, and not so interesting to others. If the theme is something I get excited to build for, I'll do it, if not, I won't. I have to be excited to build a model. I figure a lot of people around here feel the same as I do about this. So make a competition, and the people that get excited about it will join. That's how this stuff works. You don't see people at model car shows saying, "Gee, we ought to open this up to armour and aircraft too because there aren't enough people excited about cars."

First up, AF is not a democracy; it is an Internet site that belongs to one man. There are no rights to be exercised here.
In my opinion, some members have earned a claim to influence the direction of the next competition. People trucking in here and proclaiming their rights smacks of arrogance (also my opinion). I certainly hope I have misinterpreted the tone of several posters. Someone else is more than welcome to take over the reigns here; I'm not really enjoying it much at the moment.
That said, if a public vote is what people want then that is what we値l do. This time I知 going to do it a bit differently than last year. I値l post details in a couple of days.

Another idea. How about we all build the same kit or car. For instance a Peugeot 206 WRC, there'd have to be around two dozen different liverys available in aftermarket decals.
Or even better, the Porsche 917 in all its different versions. Just the short tail has heaps of liveries - Martini silver, Martini white, different Gulf Blue versions, Yellow and Burple hippy, Blue and Red Salzburg. Then add in the resin longtails and you have half a dozen more possibilities.

So this is the dot to me: I start my contribution (seriuosu, jokes, stupid?) here with a lot of enthusiasm but now I'm very tyred and bored by it, and this isn't due to newbees. So who can take his decision and if I like I'll join the theme.

Let's all cool down here maybe a minute, and like Klutz said, it's a place where we come discuss the things we like.
Much like an AA meeting, for some :grinyes:
Given the case that there's several different opinions, let's just vote for them...
Put a contest poll with all the ideas in...
for instance tobacco and alcohol,
winners,
and I forgot most of the rest, but put them all in it. and when a person makes a comment about those choices, they can post directly in that thread.
Instead of making the decision a doubtful political decision, as some would probably interpret it here and now, let the people vote on it, and I m pretty sure the most healthy result will come out (not lobbying for tobacco and cigarretes here, but it's a nice pun):grinyes:
What do you say, can we all agree on that and give each other the hand and go to vote,
Power to the people :)

Another terrific idea! (Though I'd also like to suggest F1 Ferrari's and WRC Subaru's!) I really like the though of doing a 'one design' kind of contest, where everyone's builds would be (or at least start off) very similar. Yeah, it would exclude everyone who wasn't interested in that car- but I'm really beginning to think that's OK. If this year's contest doesn't appeal, maybe next years will? Kind of as Klutz_100 pointed out earlier, it might be better to have a really cohesive contest devoted to one specific theme than a watered down least common denominator (ok, greatest common factor for the mathmeticians in the audience) type of contest.
It's probably true that there is only a core of people who will enter the contest, no matter what the topic is. The 80's contest is as inclusive a topic as I can imagine, and yet the turnout isn't nearly what we all expected. If we're only going to get a half dozen completed builds anyways, why not do it with a cool cohesive theme? Hopefully those of us who aren't inspired by the topic will graciously say "cool, not my theme, I'll sit out and enjoy watching", and those who are excited will really enjoy building for a contest where all the entries will genuinely have something in common.
As for democracy, is it really working for us here? We have a 200+ post thread that goes nowhere. Yes this community is (has to be) made up of its constituent members- but an online forum is not, doesn't need to be, and cannot be a democracy. What mods and admins say goes, and it has to be this way. A good forum is one that thas a good community of people, and is run by mods and admins who do their best to make their decisions for the best interests of the community as a whole. If Phil didn't weild absolute power, and weild it well, we'd have no motorsports contest, and no motorsports forum. Isn't it becoming clear in this thread that rule by largest minority just isn't going to work?

Actually I don't. A contest is something that is organized by one or more sponsors and they state the rules. Not the people that enter the contest. So Phil, you decide and whoever wants to enter the contest may do so, if not, tough luck!
I think the time of discussing is over now, the time to actually start BUILDING has come. Besides, if you look at the finished contest-models of last year it's safe to say that the majority inhere has a lot to say but a lot less to show us as it comes to actual modeling. So if they would like to really finish a model this year, it's time we stop arguing and start building.
Just 2 cents of someone who actualy entered a model in last year's contest and the year before that...

No, I'm thinking that keeping it on one topic would be really cool- giving the contest more cohesiveness and strength.
Say that we (Phil) chose to do WRC Subaru's. The rules would be set to be "any Subaru that raced in WRC, factory team or privateer, any scale". There's a dozen or more kits to choose from, and plenty of AM decal options. So, either you like Subies enough you'll build one (even if you don't care about WRC), you like WRC enough you'll build one (even if you don't care about Subaru's), you like contests enough you'll build one (even if you don't care about Subaru's or WRC), or you sit this one out, hope next year's contest meets your intersts more, and enjoy watching some talented builders do this year's contest.
Sennake builds one, RallyRaider builds one, Robrex builds one, and four other people enter. Wow, look at that, we have the same number that finished the 80's contest!- but it's a much cooler, stronger theme than a watered down 'everything included' contest.
I think that's alot better than ending up with one Marlboro Mitusbishi WRC, one Camel Lotus F1, one Rothman's Honda GP bike, one Martini Porsche LeMans, and one Skoal Bandit outlaw sprint.

I would just like to say - mostly to Phil actually - that if any of my few posts have in anyway been interpreted badly - I apologise.
Please accept that in every post I was trying to express what I subjectively thought might, at a conceptual level, make a good competition subject plus maybe a couple of options about making the final choice. It was never my intention to comment or infer anything negative about other people's ideas and certainly NOT about anyone making them. If I failed to express that clearly - I am sorry.
Just a thought I had. Most of the regular members who have posted here have exceptional talents in their hobby (and probably not only) and produce outstanding works. Outstanding work IMHO onlys happen when there is passion, determination and a belief in yourself. When several passionate, determined and confident people get down to create something (in this case a competition theme) we shouldn't be surprised if passion and determination sometimes raise their sweet little heads :D
Most importantly, let's use that passion and determination to have fun and a great contest/forum build for those who participate and let's stay friends and continue to help each other out with our hobby - it's what were here for.
With reagrds the contest, I have said my overall thoughts already and will now just "shut up until I put up" ;)
I would just like to say - mostly to Phil actually - that if any of my few posts have in anyway been interpreted badly - I apologise.

Another idea. How about we all build the same kit or car.
I like it! Make it a Porsche GT1 and I am in without hesitation. But that's an interesting enough idea to be ok with about any car - I hope that others feel the same. Boy would the online shops be surprised when all the decals for one car dissappear in a couple days...

Be careful how you use the rally designation vs WRC designation. If it is WRC, it only covers cars competed since 1996, production class or Group N is still a WRC Class though.

I vote for tobacco and alcohol themed cars... That way it includes a lot of different cars and racing styles, so that more people can participate on the competition, and these are the most beautifull cars that ever raced...
