I hope the detail you've put in the car won't be detracted by the detail you've put in
I hear ya'. I've had similar thoughts myself.
My philosophy is simple - there's no rule that says I MUST include everything or anything that I make for the dio (or even use the dio at all). I am just having fun experimenting with various things and seeing if I can do what I set out to do.
Right now for example, I trying to put this (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_07.jpg) to good use ;)
He can't really drive all the way out there all by himself and only paint the landscape?!?
Yes he can :p :evillol:
But he won't ONLY be painting landscapes I hope :D

Only you could pull off making a car with half it's body missing into one of the most popular and fun wip's here. The engine bay is fantastic, the little details you have added are sublime.

Is JP bringing the girlfriend to the picnic?
that dio looks very promising, and being made by you, it seems like a lot of fun

This is truly a charming little build mate. I like it, keep up the great work. The impressionistic painting bit made me laugh.

Stevenski! Stop right there and never touch it again. If you bring it to a model show like that you'll win first prize for leaving something to the imagination of the viewer!
j/k... keep working on it and surprise us with more fantastic ideas!!! I just can't believe that this build is going on and on without ever getting boring. Great work!

PS: What is the fabric in the background next to the black cardboard?

Gee, now you are starting to build trees as well. Is there something out there you are not ready to tackle - concerning modeling? I guess you can start a new category rigth after the "machining"-section :evillol: :evillol: !
Keep it up and I´m happy to see you are having this much fun.

Oh yeah, as Sebastian said, greetings from Poland. See you soon on the pitch!

Thanks guys
PS: What is the fabric in the background next to the black cardboard?
That's a loooooooooooong story Seb - but I'll spare you
My building table is an old piece if med lab equipment called a laminar flow table. Basically it ensures a positive flow of clean air over the work area. The "fabric" you can see is the mesh covering the air outlet.
For a year or so it provided an excellent, well illuminated and dust-free environment for me to work in. Unfortunately it has now died and I should really get rid of it but there's a minor problem with that.... it weighs nearly 500kg and to get it back out of my cellar workshop will be a nightmare (again) so I am not in a hurry ;)

3 months since the last update and I have finally made some progress on this build thanks to being off work sick and two ultra-great modelling buddies - Peter and Dan
Firstly Peter in Australia.
I spent a lot of money, time and experimentation on different kinds of possible materials to reproduce a water effect with no success. Peter remembered something he had used before, went to his "not so local" LHS, bought some and sent it to me all the way from the other side of the world! Thanks Peter!
What he suggested is a 2-part epoxy used for glazing decoupage craft pieces. It's completely non-aggressive and dries crystal clear in 24 hours.
First of all, I used my hot glue gun to build a styrene dam around the water part of the diorama. I then glued the diorama base to my workbench with white glue to keep it flat and steady, mixed the resin and gently poured it in.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_40.jpg
The next day I removed the dam without any drama (although next time I would probably put some release agent on the styrene just in case)
This is a wonderful lake to swim in because, as you can see, the water is crystal clear! :;)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_42.jpg
Some of you may be thinking "it's too clear". I would tend to agree but I just could not find a way to lightly color it to my satisfaction so I played safe and went with the Nordic fjord look LOL
However, to kill the very static and somewhat unnatural look of this glass-like lake, I intend adding some ripples using thick artist's acrylic gel. I have done some tests with this already and the effect is quite good IMO
Next up is the field.
From the very beginning of this diorama project I have been doing tons of research on railroad modeling sites on how to get realistic looking grass as opposed to something that looks like the carpeted interior of a Maybach :)))
Apparently there are 2 secrets to doing grass. The first is to mix colors, textures and lengths randomly. The second is to get the flocking (aka static grass) to stand up straight in the glue like soldiers on parade and not just lie there like drunks in the gutter.
The first is relatively easy but the second not. For that I needed my good buddy Daniel and a secret weapon (you'll see at the end ;) )
Here is SOME of the static grass I used
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_45.jpg
First I put down some darker, shorter grass for the ground beneath the trees. IMO this area would be more like a forest floor than a pasture and would covered with pine needles etc
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_47.jpg
I then started filling up the rest of the pasture with different colored, longer grasses in randomly mixed and placed splodges. Once the were down, I used a Popsicle stick to flatten some areas and generally increase the randomness of direction and height.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_51.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_49.jpg
In this shot you can see how the blades of grass really are all standing up straight in the glue!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_53.jpg
This was possible due to my secret weapon - the Grassinator!!! ROFL
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_54.jpg
Flocking is also known as static grass because it accepts a charge of static electricity which makes it stand up when applied with an appropriate applicator (this is how they make the flocked patterns on t-shirts etc).
You can buy hobby grade static flock applicators for about 150$ (I'll take 2 please ;) ) but I found a schematic for a DIY version on Google but I comprehend less than nothing about electronics.
Dan flew to the rescue like Superman, found and bought all the component parts and made me one himself!
Believe me, I am sure that the one you can see in the photo made by Dan is twice as good as the one made and retailed by Noch.
THANKS DAN AND PETER FOR YOUR KIND HELP IN BRINGING THIS PROJECT BACK TO LIFE~!!

Thanks dudes
I am really pleased that you like it and thanks for putting up with this eternal WIP!!! LOL
I've added some texture to the water surface. I am curious what your opinion is.
I spread some Vallejo water effect gel (basically artists' thick acrylic medium) all over the surface. My tests highlighted that it is important to put it all over the surface otherwise the ripples will look "stuck on"
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_55.jpg
I used a clay modeling tool to randomly swish the gel about into....a mess LOL
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_56.jpg
These shots show how it looks during the drying process. As you can see, some of the gel has not fully cured yet and is still opaque.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_57.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_59.jpg
To add some depth to the water (no pun intended) I tried to add a "wash & highlight" approach.
I thinned out some water-based transparent craft paint that is used for decorating glass/windows and added a VERY thin wash around the ripples.
For highlights, I used some very fine lines of Titanium White oil paint on the crests of some ripples and then lightly removed it with a tissue
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_60.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_65.jpg
Just for fun, here's a National Geographic/Discovery Channel type shot while I was standing in the middle of the lake LOL

Getting close now!
Just need the hammock, figure and some fine-tune detailing of the terrain :)
Cheers for looking in and let me know what you honestly think of the revised water

Getting close now!
Just need the hammock, figure and some fine-tune detailing of the terrain :)
Cheers for looking in and let me know what you honestly think of the revised water

You sir, are a TRUE ARTIST!!
I have been more than curious to try the "static grass" in my LHS but I figured it is just way too much work to build a diorama than the car itself. This is way more difficult to make! (looking natural vs looking clean)
I even had thoughts of jumping ship and start railroad modelling - it would be a great challenge doing artificial landscaping but the results are breathtaking - however with careful thoughts of the space it requires(I wanted a huge town with suburbs here and downtown there, so that's possibly the whole basement)and how hard it is to keep it clean, I turned back.
About the charge you used to make the grass stand, don't they fall back down after the static get discharged?

Man, that was a gutsy effort with the water ripples, but it looks very good and much more interesting. I was expecting to see a fish in the Nat Geo shot :)

Not at all - the glue holds them well and truly in place.
The idea is to put some glue on the area (I used a 50/50 white glue/water mix) and "shoot" the static grass into that.
I was expecting to see a fish in the Nat Geo shot
Mark, you don't know how close you were to seeing one!
I visited a couple of fishing supply stores looking for miniature fish lures but the good looking ones were too large (would look like a 1/25 Moby Dick) and anything the right size for scale was a shapeless and featureless lump.
I was also thinking about an epoxy putty boot instead :icon16:

It has been often said, but I think you deserve me to repeat it: It is just exceptional what you are doing modellingwise - very creative and distinguished for trying new techniques - always looking for perfection of what you made up in your mind.
Thanks for sharing - anytime you can start one of these monsterprojects again. Make sure to let us watch...

I wasn't happy with my dead tree stump amongst the pine tress - it was the least good looking thing in the whole diorama so I am replacing it with this one.

It's always so much fun to watch you build!
The static grass is terrific- maybe the best application of static grass I've seen. Please speak more of the the majick static grass machine- this is a mystery I've wondered about for many years.
The outdoor scene looks spectacular- but I'm struck by how much cleaner the great outdoors look than JP. There's no dirt/dust/mud anywhere! How can poor JP get dirty?
Two things I might suggest to add:
Pine trees nearly always have a matt of fallen pine needles beneath them. It's also somewhat unusual to see grass grow evenly around their bases (soil ph thing, I think). Maybe some rust colored static grass applied flat (nonstanding) would simulate fallen pine needles?
Also, I thin a touch of color might add a lot to the stream. Not much, but a bit of brownish/green would probably look right for a forest stream. I expect it could be mixed up with clear Tamiya acrylics and lightly airbrushed on- that way you can also vary it by depth.

HERE (http://www.ztrains.com/pages/tech/grassinator/grassinator.html) you go. The one my buddy made for me is awesome. Totally professional job.
Make a puddle of glue, stick a nail in it, load up the Grassinator with flock, hook up the grounding lead to the nail, switch on and shake. Easy :D

Take your pick:
a) You didn't see what JP had to drive through to get there!
b) This guy is a art student dude! How often do students clean their car!!? It's accumulated dirt from previous excursions looking for idyllic scenes to paint ;)
c) JP is a lazy SOB and would rather just chill out in his hammock... (if he ever gets finished ;) )

Already taken care of that (I hope) with some scatter and crushed dried herbs.

Nah, the water's OK :) If I play around with it any more, I'll be in danger of spoiling what is already good. What's that saying?... "Better is the enemy of good" :D

Some fine tuning to the diorama yesterday (the first time I have been able to touch a model in some time :headshake )
I re-worked the wires on the hammock and added rings by which it can be hung. The cords now look better IMO although they are not as good as I would have liked.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_70.jpg
As Andy suggested, I added some herbs and other gunk to where there would be debris in the area below the trees.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_71.jpg
After a walk in the forest with my dog yesterday, I weathered up the tree trunks some more by trying to replicate the moss that I noticed growing on them. I made a mix of white glue, micro balloons and green paint and splurged it around a bit
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_72.jpg
It may not be very visible in the first photo but Jean Paul now has a pair of Foster Grants resting on his chest LOL
A piece of wire wound around a toothpick and a disc of vintage photo negative fitted with white glue. (Bloody small little sods they are too! I lost 2 pairs already :( )
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_73.jpg
