The basic BBQ construction was finished and the initial paint put on - undercoated in a redish, rust protection color, dabbed with Maskol for flaking paint effect and then sprayed with Zero Jet Black.

The griddle itself is sprayed with Alclad Polished Aluminium over Mr. Hobby Gloss Black (very quick drying paint BTW – especially in a dehydrator ;) )

Whilst suffering a dose of total lunacy, I decided to try and recreate red hot glowing charcoal – doh!
I raided my trusty driveway for some tiiiiiiiiny gravel chips which were CA-ed into a block that would fit in the BBQ.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_45.jpg

This is the beginning of the weathering for the BBQ.

The griddle has been heat stained with the Tamiya weathering kit and will later get a dose of baked on fat, grime and smoke.

The stones were primed, sprayed all over with a red/orange mix and then sealed with gloss clear.
Once this had dried, I applied Maskol dabs into some cracks and crevices and sprayed it all with charcoal black then the Maskol was removed to reveal the glow.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_46.jpg

This was followed with a wash in artist oils to darken it down and dry brushed with white to simulate the ash look that charcoal gets on the edges.
I think that this stage has really added a lot to the effect and I am very happy with how it came out.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_48.jpg

This is how it will look in situ and with the weathered griddle (is there such a word??) in place (crooked hehe). The "burnt on fat" effect was done with thick blobs of artist oil and 36 hours in the dehydrator.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_49.jpg

Foods up! In progress, raw epoxy putty kielbasa and burgers. They still need to be painted up. I have left some room on the griddle for Sam's oysters

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_50.jpg

I still have to do the final weathering washed and I have one more (hopefully) surprise up my sleeve for the BBQ and then I won't be able to put of any longer the dreaded final assembly and painting of the rollbar (I am soooooooo dreading that stage )

So wadda ya think guys? Is there a future for me in mini-culinary appliances? http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/SMILEYS/mysli.gif http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/SMILEYS/tongue.gif

Some minor work done this weekend (still managing to aviod doing that roll-bar! :evillol: )

I added some VERY fictional plumbing to the engine bay. TBH I don’t even know what this is but my goal is to just add some “busyness” in there.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_51.jpg

Same for the windscreen washer bottle

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_52.jpg

This is a scratchbuilt master cylinder(?) for the braking system.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_55.jpg

Most time was spent on the headlight assembly which actually needs to be ready before I start fitting the roll-bar.
I used salt masking to try and replicate a used and pitted appearance to the Alclad chrome (didn’t work too well in fact) and some light rust spotting with Pactra rust enamel.

I painted the headlight glasses yellow in homage to Jean Paul’s origins although there is nothing in my single reference photo to suggest that they were ;)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_57.jpg

Slowly getting there…..could it be time to start another project already?

Great update, I like the front view a lot, all the dirt is so well done!
I just have a question, what are the “HT leads”? at the beginning I though they were the headlight wires, then I thought they were too thick for this application, but then I found the headlight wires which are thin and ok, so what is the use of these “HT Leads”?

And no, please don’t start another project don’t distract from this one, it’s coming out great!

Hi Ramon,

HT = Hight Tension. In other words spark plug wires :)

The 2CV has the wires come from the cylinders to this "magic box thing" on the headlight bar. The headlight wires and some others also seem to lead (oops! pun :D) here.

I made them yellow to add a bit of life to the engine bay but of course they will all be "dirtied" up as well when I have finished the wiring in there.

Don't hold your breath :D I have big problems with the roll bar. I'm afraid I might have to do it again for some reason :(

I'm really amazed from the first couple of images, the weathering is something. Also the salt mask is something I must try, rust is calling me.
I guess is a bit early to judge wiring job, it would be great with some havy weathering, only those cables seem me a bit too big in diameter, at last you know your refs.

Aaaah ok, thanks, I know them as ignition coil wires, but you’re right, they are high tension.

only those cables seem me a bit too big in diameter, at last you know your refs.
I also think they are a bit on the thick side for ignition coil wires, for this application, the wire commonly used has a diameter of 11 mm which in 1/24 scale is 0.46 mm, but I’m not sure for the 2CV

They might be a bit large but I think it's more the fact that they are still clean and bright yellow that is exaggerating the effect. The wire I used is 0,45mm diam.

Here's a ref of the set up. The HT wires look quite thick but more importantly, you can see all the detail that I HAVEN'T managed to include  :banghead:  :D

It is supposed to represent welding from when the roll cage was constructed. I think that after painting, washing and dry-brushing it might look OK

hmm....
it looks good but maybe a touch out of scale.
Of course, if you did welding joints to scale, there won't be much to see...

It could just be the close up shot making it seem to big.
Got another pic?

I really like it.. I can imagine it being welded by a cranky old stick welder with whatever welding rod was handy. If the slag wasn't knocked off it could very well look like that.

DM, I was also concerned that a couple of them might look a bit large.

It took me a couple of joints to realise just how little and thin the putty "worm" needs to be - almost like button thread in thickness. However, I think that when painted up they should be OK. Also, as you say, if they were too small they would be barely noticeable.

I like Dan's philosophy! :D Let's just say that it was the JP's owner's first welding job (just like mine )

The flashlight just sort of "happened" this morning over the space of 30 mins

I had something in the dehydrator and while I was waiting, I started playing around with a piece of styrene chucked into my Dremel Stylus to see if it could work as a mini-lathe using my scalpel.

The first cut I made reminded me of a flashlight head and I just took it from there. The buttons are just nibs of wire and the head is a circle of BMF punched out with a belt hole maker.

I think it makes a nice "optional extra" for JP's interior but it's sooooo tiny!

Cheers! :)

The roll cage is painted and now needs to be weathered. TBH I couldn't be bothered to use salt masking this time so I'll be trying to add chipping etc. with a paint brush or something.

My feeling is that the welds are already looking good. There is just one problem - due to the way I constructed the cage to be allow for final assembly, there is one place where I simply cannot add welding and its absence will be sorely missed.

The paint I used was a cheap automotive acrylic lacquer spray can. Due to the minimal surface area of the roll cage and to minimize wastage and gassing my family, I sprayed some out into a plastic party cup and poured it into my airbrush cup. Fantastic! nice and thin paint that needed no additional thinners and dried quickly.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_73.jpg

Also last night, rather than do any serious modeling, I made some more junk for the interior.

We can now be sure that Jean Paul won't get lost. We also know where he is going for his barbecue - Le Mans!

The maps are images found on google maps and printed on plain paper.
The guide book cover comes from amazon.com, printed on paper and glued to a block of styrene.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/more-junk.jpg

We also know that JP is politically incorrect and does not care about his health :evillol: :smokin:

WOW great update!!

Great ideas!

That roll cage PERFECT! I don’t think at all that the welding seams are big, not at all, just think that they are not made by robots in a fancy factory, nor by an specialized welder in a beautiful workshop with high tech equipment, this roll-cage probably was made by JP cousin or somebody else in the backyard and I think it is a great job!!

The diorama idea sounds great!

The flashlight and cigarette details are awesome!! Those tiny details enhance a lot the car and give some life to the model.

The coil wires… I still think they look thick, LOL!

What a beautiful job, and I say it honestly, I AM VERY IMPRESSED with that job on the hood, I can say with no doubt that it is one of the best finishes I have seen here, and also one of the most (if not the most) realistic weathered finishes I have ever seen, the dents, the rust, the chips, the dirt, every detail look so real!

Would you mind telling us how you did it? I mean, I think this work is worth a detailed step by step explanation, would you?

Hi Stevenski,

awesome work and great attention to details you show in this build, I enjoy every update. One little thing, though: the taillights need a bit more detail. 2CV
taillights are not completely glass, the "lip" needs to be painted flat or semi gloss black to simulate the plastic.

I'm not sure painting it would cut it.

Off the top of my head, I'd say maybe sand down the clear part a bit so that the plastic lip is thinner, then mounting that onto sheet styrene that has been shaped give an additional lip, which can then painted black.

Thanks gents - I'm glad you like it.

Thanks for pointing out the mistake  I have blackened the edges of the lights with a marker pen - it was all I could do since the lights are glued in place but it looks OK.

Would you mind telling us how you did it?

No problem, Ramon. Below is a description to how I did the hood (shown in the 2 photos. TBH it's all just one big experiment and combination of everything I could find on the web. If you have any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer them.

1.
The hood is primed and painted with satin black acrylic paint (Vallejo). It was then dry-brushed all over with a dark grey to add highlights and to age the finish.
The hood was thinned out from behind in a few places with my Dremel, held over a candle to soften the plastic and then “dented” with the handle of my hobby knife.
I added traces of bare metal at the bottom of the dents with Humbrol Aluminium Metalcote and the tip of a toothpick – dots and scratches. This was followed up with little dabs of rust colored paint added to the dents and other places using the ripped off corner of a coarse dish washing sponge.
The whole hood was given a wash of artist oils paint (Raw Umber).
For this project I added some mud splatters using a mud colored paint and the same sponge techniques as for the rust color. Finally it was given a VERY light misting of heavily thinned Tamiya XF-Buff for a “dusty” kind of look.

2.
The underside was given more brutal treatment to reflect how these places really look – they are NEVER washed or cleaned.
I gave the underside a coat of Vallejo Matte to start things because it gives a better key and finish to the dirty effect I want.
Bare metal and rust spots were applied as described above and then it was rusted with a product called Rustall – 2-3 randomly applied coats allowed to dry between each. I tried to encourage it to gather along the edges and on the areas that had been Dremeled.
This was given a black wash to add depth and them the Rustall Matte stain was applied the same way was the main Rustall.
Light orange acrylic paint was applied with a toothpick around the edges of the rust holes and mud platters with a sponge.
Finally I applied a very light local application of rust colored MIG pigment and MIG dust pigment.

It might sound a lot but the whole operation lasted 30-40 minutes (admittedly with the help of a dehydrator to help speed up drying times)

Here's where i am now more or less

Head light guards added in place and detailed with some Czech 1/35. I have installed teh oil filler cap and working dipstick I made 2 years ago.

I have tried to reproduce a wiring splice on the main battery cable. The additional ires were CA-ed in place and insulated with a thin strip of Tamiya tape.

The engine bay has been wired up and th majority of remaining parts put in place. Just needs a final wash to even it out.

I am still debating what to do about the hood for display so in case I have it open in place I have made this psuedo-hinge to funtion as a temporary holding system. It will not be in place permanently, just fixed with white glue when needed (and look better than a bloody toothpick LOL). I think it looks quite good considering it is just one piece of styrene cut into a "chevron shape with circles and semi-circles glued on to look like hinge points. PE bolts were added after I too this photo. It is not intended to be based on a real 2CV hinge.

In place.

How have I not replied? This is one of the most amazing models I've ever seen. Just... awesome in every way. Great inspiration, great details, and great skill pulling it all together. I've nothing to add, I'm just in awe!

What an outstanding piece of work mate. The rusty bits are to close to real rust :O.
Definitely a car that screams for a diorama surrounding! Maybe one where the hood would be lying next to it, as in motor repairs or so? :D

And thanks for sharing this all with us.

Incredible work, just sensational in every way. Thanks for the great descriptions too. This just made it into my ultra-selective classic models bookmark folder...

This is insane, every time I think that nothing more could be done to improve this build you slap me with new update.
Best build ever.

Aaaah!

You are nuts my friend...

Good thing you put the grills in front of the lights. It improves realism by masking the modelkit's lights... which usually look a bit toyish on modelcars...

The final frontier is here!

I´m speechless by your creativity. This looks almost real...very real. Thanks for sharing Klutz. This will be awesome - promised - when done. All that rust and the different shades of brown...neat, neat, neat...

I have started working on the display for the 2CV.

I have cut a piece of styrodur to the general shape I want, added a mound at the back and cut away the lake shore at the front and marked out the general placement of some of the details I will want to add as it develops (you can see that I changed my mind a few times LOL).

I have used cotton wool to test placement of some rocks. Needless to say, the Little Rock by the shore has been christened "Clinton" :):):)

My TV broke today and I couldn't watch the Monaco Grand Prix, so I spent the time in the workshop and...

I wonder if I will uncover anything more about JP's lifestyle....?

..we have learned something more about Jean Paul!! He's an art student and will be doing some painting during the BBQ ROFL

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_03.jpg

The design of the easel is actually based on a real one I found on the internet. I will be adding a few p/e nuts and add some paint drips later.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/DIORAMA/JP-DIO_04.jpg

As you can see, Jean Paul is quite prolific in his painting and also has a wide variety of styles ;) (the one on top is dedicated to Oli  )

The images were taken from the web, re-sized, printed and glued onto this styrene sheet. The "WIP" paintings were images that I edited in PhotoShop by converting part of the image to charcoal sketch and then erasing parts of it ;)

Thanks for looking in (still...LOL)

I 'm, as they say in French, on my ass. (sur le cul)

I have finished trying to figure out what's going on in that nutcase head of yours, cause there are no words.

It's original, doable and very very very well done. I 'm totally loving it!

Great pictures and I 'm super-anxious to see how it will all look together. I hope the detail you've put in the car won't be detracted by the detail you've put in the rest of the build. Although, you know, scrap that comment.

Just go nuts.

PS, Brilliant painting!

Damn Steven, that build gets better and funnier every time you post an update.
Jean-Paul really is an artist. Just to challenge (him?) you and your creativity... how about a naked girl next to the water, posing for him / inspiring him? He can't really drive all the way out there all by himself and only paint the landscape?!?
