Wow! 2 years and 2 moths have passed since I last worked on this

I have resurrected "Jean-Paul the 2CV" as part of my new year’s resolution to complete my unfinished builds before starting anything new.

This is where I left off. Cutting up the body and painting it in Duplicolor Black Gloss, the basic roll cage frame has been made, a scratch-built bench seat, resin copy of the wheel to hang on the frame and a few other bits and pieces for the engine etc.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_01.jpg

Once I started looking at it again, I felt that he is looking too clean and I would like to go for a well used and beaten up look.

The paint was stripped off, and the plastic thinned from behind

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_02.jpg

With the aid of a candle to soften the plastic and an Exacto knife handle, I added some dings, dents and holes on various parts of the bodywork

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_03.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_04.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_05.jpg

I applied a custom mix of „undercoaty” color to the dented areas that I want to later show through where the paint has been scratched and cracked.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_06.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_07.jpg

To create the damaged paint effects, I am playing around with a few different techniques - salt and dabs of liquid masking for chipped paint; thin CA glue and baking powder for rust spots.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_08.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_09.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_10.jpg

I put some paint over the body. I used a mix of Vallejo acrylic - Negro with a few drops of Vallejo Dk. Grey for scale.

I decided to use acrylics since I won’t be polishing this car (quite the opposite, in fact!) and I felt that an acrylic would be easier to work with when peeling the Maskol etc. because it is softer.

Here’s a shot of the body before removing the chip masks:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_11.jpg

And here’s how Jean-Paul looks after removing the masking:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_12.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_13.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_14.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_15.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_16.jpg

I am quite happy with how this is progressing. In fact, it looks better in 1/1 because it is not quite so “in your face” as it is in macro photography.

Of course this still needs a lot of washing, staining, rust application etc etc.

Thanks for looking in

I'm wondering the same and that I'd to know you at those time with Alex' sky shoe research in any river here LOL. I'm very happy to see JP alive and in good healt despite all the accident you dream for him :D. Great, I want to see special effect on dents now :)

Yay, JP is back! It's like the return of an old friend. Maybe there is hope for long lost old builds (and maybe I could learn from this).

The beat up bodywork looks terrific. Good ideas, and excellent execution. There's only one problem now- the paint itself is too clean. :sly: For JP to have all these lovely bumps and divots from daily use, the body paint is going to show wear and tear, too. Maybe a gentle drybrushing with dark grey would help. (Did you ever get ahold of that How to Build Dio's book?) Mix up a dab of artist's oil paint to a color slightly lighter than the body color, and lightly brush it onto the body, especially the lower surfaces. Here the paint would get scuffed, scratched and buffed from being driven through the vegetation/pot fields.

You mean the Shep Paine book? Yep thanks, a buddy in the USA sent it to me for me to photocopy. I also found a terrific series of books and DVDs on terrain modeling by Richard Windrow

Hi Klutz,

I have not had the opportunity to see this thread before... Nicely, I see an exquisit work done on it.

To be honest, I consider myself a Klutz´s fan (and a Gionc´s fan). Your crazy ideas (in the positive way) and skills are very motivating things to improve our models.

Thanks for share your work and tips. I hope to try applying them in one of my next models.

Hope to see more advances soon!

PD. Could you write the model and brand of the machine you use to create your aluminium parts, please?

That's the one. I seem to remember he goes over dry brushing, an a few other weathering techniques that would be terrific for JP. Actually, it seems you may already have read those bits.

What aluminium parts did you have in mind exactly?
I don't have any special machinery for metal parts. Just my left and right hands  (plus some AF members who do have lathes ;) )

Great job on the weathering and abuse of this car. I have to agree with the gloss black duplicolor paint; it just etched the hell out my Taisan Starcard. I used the same techniques but was rewarded with a kick in the balls. And lots of sanding. Very ambitious goal about finishing current models before starting a new one!

A small update for April Fools’ day :)

The dash has been painted, dry brushed and weathered. The dials are the kit decals – I may put some acetate over them (or not).

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_24.jpg

There is some sort of electrical box half way along the steering column so this was wired. The tie down is a thin slice of round shrink tubing slipped over the wires and column and then warmed with a lighter flame.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_25.jpg

After 2 years I finally decided on a method to do the upholstery on the bench seat  It is material used to make flocked lettering that is ironed on to customized T-shirts.

I was having a T-shirt made for my cousin’s birthday and I noticed that there was a lot of left-over material lying around the plotter. I asked if I could have some and they were happy to give it to me since it would just go into the bin otherwise. (BTW I am pretty sure that this stuff would make great carpeting too!)

The material was white in color so, after I had cut out appropriately sized strips, I colored it with a sharpie pen. It was threaded around the seat frame, fixed in place with CA glue and then dirtied it up with some MIG pigments scrubbed in with a stiff brush

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_26.jpg

The seat frame was also weathered with some paint chipping, dirt and rust in the lower joints.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_27.jpg

This is how the cabin is looking at the moment.

Great stuff- the 'sling' seats look spot on. I also really like the diamond tread plate, and the wiring on the steering column for the NOS bottle is terrific- just what this build needed!

I was reading through the post looking for typos and I thought that if I do add the glass, it should be cracked or broken

Definitely. If you can get one, a microscope slide cover would be perfect. Nothing looks like broken glass quite like broken glass, and a slide cover would be pretty close to scale thickness. Just be careful with it as you break it. :uhoh:

This project just gets better and better. The seats are perfect and are very classy in their realism. As for the gauges, I wouldnt make them broken, i have 2 trucks in way worse condition then this 2cv and my gauges are immaculate!
They're the only thing left that arent rusted or broken:iceslolan But I think in keeping the theme going here, you would add alot of charactor with the cracked gauge glass.

Thanks guys!
Micha, this will be my first project that is more a pain the back than the a$$ :evillol:

I woke up early and got an hour's work in. I used it to detail the battery.

I added some battery posts with 0,7mm soft solder wire and weathered the battery up with some ground up artists pastel chalks. I found this different to work with than MIG pigments - they do not adhere so much and effects build up much slower. I found that slightly wetting the battery with water and then "smudging" the chalk around gave quite a nice effect (at least in my opinion LOL)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_30.jpg

The battery was wired with 30 gauge wrapping wire and the Detail Master Battery hardware set. The solder wire was selected for thickness so that the clamps could be slipped on for a cleaner fix.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_31.jpg

The battery leads were also weathered with chalk pastels for a more realistic look in keeping with the overall theme of "sloppy building technique" ;) LOL

This shot shows the difference between an non-weathered piece of wire and the finished battery.

Haha, that's the first thing I thought of also. When all is done, the model will be at home in a model show, and your work of art can go to a gallery. The battery is great, I didn't know solder can be so small but sure looks better then painted plastic, it really represents a battery post extremely well. I'm going to have to look into getting such thin solder.

Les, if you have any problem finding it let me know.

Cut into thin slices, this kind of solder is also useful for making rivets and bolt heads in less obvious places and it makes quite good fuel and brake lines IMO ;)

The battery posts have been left "long" for the time being ad I will trim them down during final assembly.

Update - more to convince myself that I have actually done something than because there is something to show

I really thought I had more of this build already done than in fact it turned out - I have spent quite a lot of time painting up fiddly little parts that I had previously ignored such as rear view mirrors, windscreen wipers, filler caps etc. Oh well.....

I have managed though to finish the chassis and floor pan (2 separate parts) and glue them together. I think it looks OK.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_33.jpg

I was quite happy with how the weathering of the exhaust came out. I used Model Master Gun Metal, some flat clear and then Rustall, black wash and MIG rust powder. I suppose it could have some more rust on it but who's gonna see it anyway ;)

I am 99,9% decided that I will leave the hood off on the finished model. Although this will not be strictly true to the original car, it will be in keeping with the overall "openness" of Jean Paul and what is more, the engine bay detailing and weathering will then be visible :D

He'll look something like this:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/2CV%20Rock%20and%20Rollbar/JP_37.jpg

Following the advice of Ole, I added a lighter color around the edges of some of the rust spots and he was dead on right - it does look better. Thanks Ole!!

Yeah, you'll notice I didn't send you an oil filter instead? :evillol: But seriously, nothing I could add would overshadow this build. And I'm happy to contribute. But you've gone and mounted it upside down! :uhoh: (j/k  ) I still think that a good thick application of rustall in the groove would look great on it.

Yes, it's the kit battery. The Varta decals are something that I made some time ago (For the Daytona actually :) )

WOW! WOW!! AND WOW!!!

I’m glad you are still working on this, since the beginning I though I it was very promising, and so far is exceeding every expectation!

The body dents, rust and scratches are sooo well done!!!
The seats are awesome! The suspension job resulted excellent!

The engine looks very promising.

I just think that being a car that old and with such a heavy use, the chassis should have a little more dirt, and may be some dents and lots of scratches also, since the roads that car should drive through should be very bad don’t you think? I think something like what you did on the firewall would look incredible; by the way, that firewall finish is AWESOME!!!!!!! And the exhaust system is also so real!

I think honestly, that the engine bay has one of the best weathering finishes I have ever seen!!!

Congratulations on a great finish!!!! I will surely keep my eyes on this build!

It seems like this build will lead you to build armors judging by how much fun you had, I hope we can be here to lead you back to the "right" path :D:D:D

I admired your "rust," I also liked the engine and interior. Can't wait for the completed display, was wondering if you would be making diorama for this as well? (I think it looks homely in a busy mornings in the fish market, or a restoration garage, next to old ferraris)

It seems like this build will lead you to build armors judging by how much fun you had, I hope we can be here to lead you back to the "right" path :D:D:D

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!:nono:
Do not give him ideas! Stevensky would be a great military modeler, but he's a better car builder and I'm sure his abilities are much more appreciated here.

Thanks guys :)

I just think that being a car that old and with such a heavy use, the chassis should have a little more dirt, and may be some dents and lots of scratches also, since the roads that car should drive through should be very bad don’t you think?
Ramon, you are without doubt correct and I agree with you that there is a disparity between the weathering "above deck" and that "below deck" ;)
Once JP is finished and I have decided if and how to make a display for him, I will re-visit his "bottom" :evillol:

 Tham, I have a project on my "to do" list where I can combine the best of both worlds ;)

Thanks again Gents

Oli, I added a cracked glass cover for the speedometer.
It is just piece of acetate cut to shape and size, scratched with a scalpel blade with one small piece cut out. Barely visible but I like it :icon16:

I found the sun visors I made two years ago for this project!
The hinge is a simple construction of wire, drilled plastic stock and wiring insulation - easy to make but has the nice benefit of being "workable" which means you can pose them more naturally.

Windscreen dusted with Tamiya Buff. A good friend of mine says this looks rubbish and spoils the whole build http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/SMILEYS/Mooning2.gif

The start of an idea for some trunk trash. A portable BBQ.
(in case anyone wonders, yes I will be trying to make some sausages to go on there  )

A sausage grille- now there's a satisfying answer to what's going in the back! :grinyes: Will you be needing a half keg of beer to go with it?

Wow!!!

It is really hard to tell if your builds are more fun than impressive or more impressive than fun, but definitely are both, and also it’s very clear that you are having a lot of fun with it, which makes your builds highly enjoyables.

The instrument cover looks awesome, it looks so real! The sun visors look great, but I think they look very new compared to the rest of the car, may be some wrinkles? And regarding the windshield, it looks good, but the clean/dirty border looks a little blurred, normally the clean borders are sharply defined by the wiper blades aren’t they? And don’t forget some streaks, those wiper blades must be so old to clean that well.
That grill is very promising, what else are you going to add?

Keep on those small details, even when they are fairly visible, they are a lot of fun!!!

I’m definitely looking forward to see more!

amazing update yet again, ski-man!

Loving the cracked dash-stuffy, it makes a world of difference!

Also with all that shit you're adding, the nice wipers and the junk on the trunk, you've got a really nice driving barbecue. Now finish it off with atleast two cooking steaks, made of tasty horse (you speak french,do you?).

And some mayo and make me happy, old chap!

Thanks guys.

Andy, is that an offer...? :evillol: j/k

Ramon - I will be adding some streaks and bird poop but I think you are right (again) - the edges of the window dirt are a bit too "fuzzy". Wonder if I can do anything about it now...?

Certainly more of the fun, I think ;)

(you speak french,do you?).
Il était une fois :D

Dude, that's one hell of a shopping list you got for JP!!

I think some masking templates will do
Easy to do with a circle cutter and then a little mist just in the edges so you don’t have a heavy dirt in the rest of the windows.

This is coming along amazingly, it certainly is a lot of fun, (why don't I experience this on my models???) Everything I see on this wip I want to try out on my own builds, add the sun visors to that long list now. It's too late now but if you had 2 fuel tanks in the trunk area, this could be Mad Max's more economical road warrior car.:grinyes: I'm really looking forward to seeing the bbq painted up.
