..call me ignorant if you like but what is that Canister? Pressurized paint?

I'm guessing it's acrylic but man, how much did that set you back?

No thats a C02 cannister (I assume anyway). Thats what Supercarfreak is using as his air supply for his airbrush. I was always too afraid to get one. Me and pressurised stuff don't mix ;)

You can refill them though can't you Supercarfreak?

Thanks

SupercarFreak

yes, im positive you can refill them

i have no idea how much it set me back, it is my dad's, he bought it when he got the airbrush :)

Great for research that one, must save it somewhere!

well, this is very frustrating. i started polishing the center of the hood, i polished away quite a bit of paint that i didnt want to. i waxed it just to see what it would look like. you can see in the pics where more polishing is required. it will be repainted

Don't worry, I'm sure it'll come out as great as the rest of the car with a little time and patience. Although with all you have invested into the kit I was suprised you didn't take it to the local paint and body shop and have them spray it with real Ferrari red imported from Italy :D

SupercarFreak
02-26-2004, 07:07 PM
i thought of that, but i feel they wouldn't take the time or care that i would , ie. sanding between coats, flaws in paint, etc

86_SR5
02-26-2004, 08:24 PM
they should if you take it to a respectful paint-shop. I've seen 1:18 indy cars at shows that were painted at body shops and they look great.

here she is after approximately 200 black particles were polished out of the paint

You polished it quite soon after the painting. I think the paint didn't have enough time to harden, because like I said earlier Tamiya acrylic takes ages to cure. Sometimes it's still soft after 2-3 months. When the paint is soft the marks from coarser polishing cloths go deeper and there can be marks on the finish that appear after the final polishing because the paint shrinks while it dries.

You could also get just the right color if you'd buy automotive paint.

360spider at www.italianhorses.net says tamiya acrylic's drying time is very similar to their lacquer paints, he recommends 4-5 days after 2nd wet coat

maybe I will buy a yellow modeling pen and see how that works

03-03-2004, 12:36 AM
but why?? you use a modelling pen and you'll end up getting pen strokes. seems the wheels are metal painted in enamel.. if I were you I would do this:

get some masking tape, mask around the ring.. and spray it with some tamiya yellow, acrylic or lacquer. remove tapes.. clean up any over spray with some paper napkin soaked in alcohol. and you're done!

that's a good idea pflau. sounds better than the pen.

Just place the wheel onto a model drill, one where you can regulate the speed nice and low, and then dip a brush in a nice thinned mix of yellow, and slowly lower it onto the spinning wheel.
You'll get a great finish! Just need patience and a steady hand!

No problem. Its very nice, the tranny looks as if it were the real thing. The attention to color, and detail is amazing.

I am also building a large scale model, except from scratch. I hope mine is at least half as detailed as yours! Check it out, link is in my sig.

Thanks man, when I build my brakes I am using your pictures as a reference as they are built so well.

I just looked through all the pics, the brakes look magnificent. Excellent job. Same with the wheels. Did you have to paint the body? Or was it pre-painted/powdercoated? Sorry, I cant remember that far back into the build :grinno:.

hehe no prob. the body was pre-painted. however, they did such a magnificent job *sarcasm*... there's orange peel everywhere, not to mention flaws in the mold anyway, so i am going to paint it myself. i'll work on the body gallery today.
