So does this F1 have the #01R paint scheme without the HDF and livery? Sure looks like it to me.

Peloton25
07-01-2012, 08:54 PM
Indeed it does. I wrote this in response to someone else's question on the car once based on stories relayed to me about the history of this car. Easiest just to copy it here.

Chassis #043 is a very unique F1 road car. It was originally built for Motokazu Sayama, who owned 'Ueno Clinic' in Japan. That was the title sponsor on the Le Mans winning F1 GTR in 1995. His business was a plastic surgery firm in Japan and it is humorous to note (perhaps TMI?) that one of their primary offerings was penile enlargements. -LOL

Anyway, the story goes that he leased GTR #01R from McLaren and McLaren made arrangements for Lanzante Motorsports to run the team for him. Mr Sayama's goal was to provide a drive at Le Mans for a Japanese driver named Masanori Sekiya, as a Japanese driver had never won Le Mans. With their victory that year he became the first.

McLaren had made an agreement with Mr Sayama that at the completion of the race, so long as GTR #01R did not win, he would be able to purchase this GTR. Of course what happened was exactly the opposite; the car won and McLaren was not willing to give up such an important piece of their history so instead of the GTR, Mr Sayama purchased road car #043 instead, probably at a reduced rate.

The road car is painted exactly like the GTR was - with almost black paint on top and a grey bottom section that cuts through the lower body panels from nose to tail. Interestingly this paint scheme for #01R (and subsequently #043) was chosen to match Mr Sayama's recent purchase of a Mercedes Benz 500SL - remember - this was 1994/1995.

This car has spent most of its life in Japan, very rarely being seen at all. A few months ago it left for the UK and is in the hands of a new owner who very much respects the unique history of the car and suggested to me he plans to keep it 'original'!

The few months ago I mentioned there would have been mid-2011.

Anyone know where to see a f1 in london? any dealer or workshop? I read something about a street that, if you're lucky, you can see the "gtr harrods" or something like that, but not sure.

I've been a few times in England and I have never seen a live F1, only the LM3 in Paris but it was too fast to be my dream since childhood. thanks

Excerpt from the McLaren P1 feature article in the November 2012 issue of Wheels Magazine Australia:-

Few people know that during the F1's development, with money extremely tight and the entire project in jeopardy, Beatle George Harrison paid for his F1 almost two years in advance, writing a cheque for 540,000 pounds (then $1.3m) to keep the program alive. "You buy my new records, don't you?" he asked his friend Gordon Murray. "Well, I want to buy your car."

Uh...as in Orlando, FL where I live?! LOL. I hope so...maybe the owner will bring it to the Celebration car show this year when I'm there.

Which ones?

Peloton25
12-07-2012, 10:32 AM
Obviously #012 in the center.

The silver ones are much harder. The one missing major body parts is most likely #070. The other one seems like it could be #046, but the little 'GB' sticker is missing from the rear bumper.

Can you make those images clickable thumbnails? If not, I can do it. (Done)

Peloton25
12-11-2012, 11:46 AM
Well if it is #070 then someone has put the original coilovers back onto the car. Just a guess though based on what can be seen.

LMP Cars did appear to have the car for sale as recent as July 2010 and I don't recall seeing it surface since then. Could have ended up anywhere.

#15R ended up in very good - and somewhat obvious - hands. I've heard it will be sympathetically freshened up and will likely remain in race trim. Might resurface when the weather gets better.

If it really has the 96' Le Mans livery, it's I think the most historic one to have there. Also the racespec condition is plus I think. I wonder what was the price tag, road legal GTR's sold around 1,6 million £ (readed this somewhere those times or then I remember wrong), so allways can wonder the price this case.
BUT more important is that the car is good knowing hands now, GULF Collection is defenitely the right place to be.

Peloton25
12-30-2012, 02:53 AM
I can say that more was spent purchasing that GTR than was the average price for an F1 road car at the time (beginning of 2012).

A couple of other GTRs also changed hands for similar figures within weeks of 15Rs sale. It was the first time in history that I am aware of GTRs trading for more than road cars generally had. Each of the three GTRs were in the hands of longtime owners and have very good provenance which adds to the justification.

Very interesting. Can you tell us which GTR's changed hands these weeks? And is there any news about their new locations?

My personal opinion is that if GTR has a good long race history with Le Mans: the value can be anything.....
