Porsche 917K Psychedelic

Hi all,

this is my Porsche 917K in Psychedelic design.

I used the kit of Fujimi ( Gulf 917K 1970 Le-Mans No.20), the decals are from UMI-Modellwerke / Scaledesings.

The decals fitted from the size and form rather badly. They also do not correspond to the original (Watkins Glen 6 Hours 1970).

Alterations:
- engine cover (is narrow)
- engine cover latches, rearview mirror, window for rearview mirror scratchbuild
- trimtabs from sheet metal
- exhaust pipes from styrene round rod

A few damages and fight tracks should be - the destroyed left headlight however not.
He has fallen down - I noticed this, however, only when my foot stood on it. Perhaps, I build there still a new part on it.

Re: Porsche 917K Psychedelic

Nice build!
After checking some reference pictures i see what you mean about the decals not matching the Glen car.... otherwise....who can tell :-)
While the weathering is nice i find it a bit strong ( matter of taste of course ) and it probably covers too much details like the tyre logos.

Hello,

here you find pictures from Brands Hatch 1000 Kilometres Race 1971, with similar weather conditions and similar racing distance (Watkins Glen 1139 kms)

http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...-04-photo.html

- after those I have been directed.

Re: Porsche 917K Psychedelic

Great looking model. Don't feel bad about the decals the guy who was Umi did the artwork and he does some of Studio 27's stuff, his stuff does not always fit well. See the stripes on this Rothman 956, they should not be so wide as to touch the gas filler but that is the only way it fits due to th artwork being incorrect. Those were Studio 27 decals.

Re: Porsche 917K Psychedelic

Your model looks great despite the issues you've had with it. In defense of UMI
these decals were designed for the Heller 917K long before the Fujimi came out. S27 have UMI designed decals of the same markings that are made to fit the Fujimi kit, they are unfortunately the wrong colour!

Re: Porsche 917K Psychedelic

Fantastic. Having built this kit myself a couple of years ago, I know how hard the appliance of the livery is. Please tell me, what color you used. It matches the actual color perfectly. Great choice!

I don´t mean to be picky. Nevertheless - there are a couple of things that don´t match the actual car. Have a look at the photo:

There you can see, that the window trim on the side windows is white (is it taped) and that Porsche fitted some sort of hole into the roof to make use of the rearview mirror-setting.

Nevertheless, yous looks way better than mine. Great work on this - IMHO - the best race car livery ever. I like the photography as well! What will be next, Jenner!

Yes with the side windows you are right. Because, however, already the Decals did not correspond to the original, I have not paid attention to it any more thus. From the Watkins Glen Race I had only this one picture,

the others were newer.

But, the little window for the rearview mirror in the roof is there, this is to be recognised on some of the photos.

I don't know this. Probably I will do first a break. I had on this job thus some problems, also had no more fun. And contently I am not with it also.

I used TS-24 Purple from Tamiya. Do you use the decals from Studio27?

Greetings, Jens
