Well, I have a 93 Ranger regular cab, 2 wheel drive, that sucks, but the manual makes it so much funner, they are pretty good trucks, good acceleration in first and second gears, i can chirp them off on shifts into second, and a friend with a Ranger said he's done it in third before, and thrid and fourth accelerate pretty good, tops out at about 103 i think but they're not bad trucks. And by experience i have to say they are pretty damn tough, i went from 35-0 by going off the road and going off a culvert into a creek and it did'nt do shit to it really!!, btw i was tired and not paying attention, never drive when drowsy. But they are great on mileage, although I'm getting a new exhaust on it for sure this summer, it doesn't have too much power so if you have the money possible use forced induction on it, i'm thinking about that everyday.

you should go with new one if you can they come a close to be chep and they are hard to ride of. they are lil fast trucks. 95 and up you can mustang engines in them and trannys but you have to make some mods but not that much anywhys. then put some flow masters on it then it whell be in nice lil truck.

My first truck was a '83 ranger with a regular cab short bed and a 2.3 ltr. 4 with a automatic. It was a great little truck, it was 2 wheel drive with stiff suspension so it actually corrnered really good. It was gutless but for a first truck that was great because it let me learn how to really drive it to get the most out of the power it had, and it kept me from getting into too much trouble. I'm glad I didn't start out with more power, I could fishtale that thing all over the place and control it, if I would have started with more power then I probably wouldn't have been able to control it as easily, by the time I got my second truck with double the displacement and a 5 speed, I knew how to handle sliding a truck around and was able to deal with the extra power in my new truck.

So all in all, I think a ranger is a good first truck, my recommendation is to get a regular cab short bed with a 4 cyl. for a first truck because they are a lot easier to control and learn in, my extended cab 4x4 ranger doesn't handle nearly as well as either one of my regular cab 2x4's (ranger and dakota) did. Good luck and be safe in the new truck.

Ya, it sucked that it was an automatic because of the fact that they rob you of a little power and performance, but for a first vehicle it is nice to be able to concentrate on dealing with traffic and stuff like that, I think for learning the automatic was good, after I learned and got some experience I got a manual with more power.

yeah i agree on that. i think it is a better to learn on AT then a stick but also it is easyer to learn a stick before a AT. because then you know how to drive a stick and then you can drive a automatice easly. plus the ranger is more powerful when it is a stick. so anyways.
