recently bought some stereo equipment
I recently purchased 2xAlpine Type R 12" DVC 4 ohm subs (the SWR-1241D's) and had purchased a Rockford Fosgate Power 550S amp with them. Now im no stereo genius so i wasnt 100% positive in how nice this setup would sound. The amp specs say that it can produce either 137.5w x2 at 4 ohms, 275w x 2 at 2 ohms or 550w x 1 in bridged mode. I was guessing that the stereo shop installing the equipment will be selecting to wire the subs up where they each run at 2 ohms. (From what i hear you can wire the voice coils as parallel and split the ohm load in half). The question is, the specs on the sub say it can handle 100-300w RMS (150w per voice coil) or 1000w peak power. The salesman told me for 75 more bucks i could swap the 550s for a 750s which would up the available watts to each speaker a bit and therefore more then likely be available to provide less watts that are cleaner correct? meaning it can provide the same amount of power as the 550s but with less distortion if turned up quite loud? I may be totally wrong in this because stereos is something i do not know. :|
thanks for any help |

the total sound input increase you get by doubling your amp power is only 3 dB ... not really that much. The power thing for bridged VS stereo can be a little hard to understand. When you bridge an amp, you effectively place only half of the load on each of the amp channels. So if the amp is stable to 2 ohms stereo, then it will only be stable to 4 ohms mono. I am sure the shop has installers who know this stuff, and know how to best load the amp down. Some subs, especially in a sealed box, require a lot of power. Personally, I would go for as much power as I can.

well, when everything was paid today i had just decided to go with the originally planned 550S for the time being and not pay 100 more bucks for the 750S ... but an hour after i dropped the car off, i got a call saying the had no 550S in stock so i could either change down and get money back or change up and pay a little more. Well, i bitched a lot about it for a minute and said ill pay 50 bucks more for the 750S and they said deal. so i got the 750S for just 50 more bucks which is what i wanted. And i am very happy with it
![]() also had an alarm installed and power door locks at the same time. I now have an order in for a 140DB alarm siren so i really know when it goes off and so does everyone else since i park somewhat far from where i live. Townhouses suck |
