well, considering its a carbed engine, doesnt have to pass emissions, and its a bulletproof 12A, you can go nuts and get gobs of power from that engine. Of course, the price to pay on making those aforementioned gobs is streetability. But if you really want to go fast, get a peripheral port and LOTS of fuel delivery upgrades, a really nice exhaust system, lightened flywheel, and big fat tires to hold the road in that tiny car. Have fun.

i wouldn't get a peripheral port unless this is going to be a race car. if you still want it to be relatively streetable, then go for a streetport or a bridgeport. just make sure that your engine gets plenty of fuel as you're modding your car (get an ecu upgrade).

here's the recipe that worked for me and saved me alot of money cuz im ghetto like that.
on my 1st gen i went straight for the racing beat headers hooked up to a 2.25inch piping straight pipe in to the stock muffler which i later changed to a magnaflow for about 20 more horses and better top end. i removed the air pump from the motor as well as the a/c pump. then i hretuned the stock carb with 1 inch primary venturi's and 1.2 inch secondary venturi's, i replaced the old fuel lines from under the hood and near the gas tank but just as a saftey thing.
i also replaced the stock fuel filter with a hi flow glass filter with replaceable filament that i picked up at Kragen auto parts for 10 bux.
i then replaced the stock fuel pressure regulator that sits in the fuel line under the hood near the carb with an adjustable one and linked in a pressure gauge, these pices cost only $20. next i changed the air filter to an open K&N style filter. i also wired the stock fuel pump directly to the battery with a power switch in line to control it of course but you can wire it to the battery and have the ignition control its on/ off funct. with the help of a 2 dollar 12 volt relay.
rewiring the pump lets it get enough juice so that you can actaully here it clicking like an aftermarket.
all these mods together made my stock 1st gen alot more fun to drive while i was waiting for my streetport motor to be done.
they gave me a solid 130 horses with much better take off and top end.
it ran more like a GSL-se just not as much torque and the mods cost less than $200
