Lightbulb A Little Story

Here's a little story my friend told me when he had his car tested for emission. I placed it here, even if he doesn't have a Honda, since I own a Honda, and because I like Honda so much. But anyway, here goes:

just like me (and actually, because of him), my friend has both his cat and resonator taken off, so we figured that we might fail emissions. We're ready for that, and actually we're thinking of ways to pass it. Anyway, he went, quite nervous, and he passed. Not only that, his emissions were even lower than brand new cars, which surprised him and the tester. His brother-in-law also went to test his car, and it is stock with cat, and it failed. Hhmm...does this say anything? We're still quite amazed (but pleased), by the result. He thinks it might be because more air than fuel is burned, hence the overall better emission that it gave. Though that doesn't mean all of you should be throwing your cats away now. I still think it is better to have your cat on, though now I question whether it's really necessary.

UH, how would removing your cat and resonator help burn more air??? The combustion is done in the engine, not in the exhaust system

Of course, his car is as modded as mine. Did forget to mention that one.

Err, sparq did say that removing the cat and resonator does not produce a air/fuel ratio, so I did clarify that yes, having other things on his car that gave a better burn helped.

Sorry but your intake and spark plug wires are not enough to change the emissions of a car.And what's with "custom 4" 4-1 header" 4'' exhaust give me a break.

Err, no that's 1 3/4" not 4". And I didn't say it's just the intake and spark plugs, but it seems that instead of getting worse, what with the cat taken off, it seems to have gone better for some reason, which is what is still a puzzle to us.

Since the common thinking would be that cat taken off=worse emissions, then it would stand to reason that my friend would have failed the emissions test. But he didn't, and actually the tester said his car is even better than brand new cars. Go figure. We still don't know what caused it, and we're still trying to go over what things he has that might have made his emission better instead of worse.
