WIP: Ferrari 512TR

Had to take a break from my Daytona and fixing those last mainly chrome-plated bits and pieces to otherwise complete model. So I picked up a Fujimi 512TR from the stack. Received from a friend of mine complete set of Mipa brand of paints, including primer, some pre-shaded water based Ferrari colors, and 2K clear and had to test how those worked together. Must admit, that staying in one brand of paints is a good idea, the finish is remarkably better than mixing different suppliers.

Here is the body after priming with Mipa's rapid primer:

And base coat of water based Azzurro California:

And this is after clear-coat, once again Mipa's 2K-clear:

This all was achieved in just three evenings (very rapid curing time). Now I have to wait a couple of days before polishing the body.

Thanks for looking!

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

I thought it was going to be red after the usual pink base...
It's nice in blue.

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

Some progress, been busy with the interior. Got it painted with Lifecolor acrylics, the leather parts coated with satin clear. The decals where a mess, the instrument panel oversized, white register off, and behaved very badly with MicroSol. However, this is where I am now:

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

To FerrariTR: yes those seats will be visible, but as I'm trying to build this quickly (in my standards less than a year!), I will let them be.

Some more progress, have painted the engine, still missing paint from engine room, and the muffler, which I had to saw loose from the frame to make it easier to finish. Noticed, that Fujimi forgot the starter and the solenoid on top of it, but since the hood is fixed, who cares?

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

Again some progress. The undeside is ready, except the metallic rear axle, which needs to be painted black. The main components are screwed (litterally) together, this must be Fujimi's answer to all those snap-tite kits of Revell and Tamiya! Been masking the body, to paint window frames and half of the rear bonnet black. Quite a mess!

Here are the pictures.

Note the little screws that hold major components together:

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

Getting it slowly done! Spent a couple of evenings masking the body, then 15 minutes of airbrushing and the masks are in bin. Wondering if this is all worth of it?

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

Clean looking build. The color reminds me more of Azzurro Monaco (my favorite color) than Azzurro California. Maybe it's just the lighting.

Isn't the chassis supposed to be all black rather than light gray?

Keep us posted!

That was what I had in my mind, but the instructions told to paint chassis the same mixed gray as the inlet manifolds! Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of TR from underside, so I don't really know how it looks.

The color is professional mixed Azurro California, but you have to remember, that it is 1:1 car paint painted on a 1:24 model, so it looks too dark. Should be toned to a lighter shade/mixed with smaller metallic flakes to get the scale effect. Of course the lighting plays some role, but the pictures are color balanced, and show the paint almost as it is.

Re: WIP: Ferrari 512TR

Finished it, after one and a half months, and I thought it was a quick build!
