My 92 prelude SR vs 2002 Acura TL

Well, ive only had my lude for 3 or 4 days, and my freind whos got a 2002 TL wanted to see what my lude had. Ive never raced before, and both our cars are auto, hes got triptronic shifting. He counted to 3, and honestly said i had a shitty start, I didn't even burn out. I think I was really nervous, but I guess ill learn from expereince...anyways so at about 60 kph he had about half a car length on me, and at about 110 he had a full car length to a car length and a half on me, thats when my cell phone fell out of the little compartment thingy and I stopped :P I think that i could have beaten him off the line, but once that big TL got going it was hard to beat. Anways, thats my first race, i should probably floor it right away instead of flooring it once i hit about 10 kph lol. anyways, I know auto isn't good preformance wise, but does anyone have any tips about racing with an automatic car? thanks for reading, hopefully ill win my next one!

PS: The dealer filled the car with 87 octane gas when i got it, and i haven't needed to fill it since, do you think that would make any diff? I noticed when i got home, and popped the hood there was a bit of smoke, or steam coming from the engine, the car is in mint condition by the looks of it, i hope its normal.

Well I'll throw in my $2's worth of thoughts...

"I didn't even burn out." < you dont want to burn out from a launch... thats just lost traction....

"I think that i could have beaten him off the line, but once that big TL got going it was hard to beat. Anways, thats my first race, i should probably floor it right away instead of flooring it once i hit about 10 kph lol" < yeah, I doubt your car has the power to really lose too much traction, so from now on... just mash out. And you should gain the advantage.

" The dealer filled the car with 87 octane gas when i got it, and i haven't needed to fill it since, do you think that would make any diff? " < I dont see how 87 Octane would hurt... but its probably not helping out. Unless the car has high compression you shouldnt really worry, but I'd go with 89.

"I noticed when i got home, and popped the hood there was a bit of smoke, or steam coming from the engine, the car is in mint condition by the looks of it, i hope its normal." < Hmmm this shouldnt happen at all... check all your hoses for water leaks. And check the Intake, Valve Cover, Head gaskets for any type of leaks or oil...

I doubt an Exhaust leak would cause smoke... but check the Exhaust Manifold gasket anyways...

Anyways, since you brought the car home from a dealer... it should of come with a limited warranty correct? If so, take it back to them and see if they cant diagnose the problem.

All in all sounds like you got yourself a cool car.. good luck with it any with any mods you do to it. Oh and Welcome to AF.

When tring to race my girlfriends auto ls teg the best launch i could get was when I would hold the brake and push the gas down about 1/4 way to the floor, the let off the brake and floor it. That was the only way I could get the car to launch in any remotely respectable way.

thanks guys

Thanks for all your help and such, the smoke that was coming from under the hood, it wasnt like a constant spew, more like a small mist...I'm thinking its probably wax if they waxed the engine, which that dealer did to my moms 2003 accord when she got it... or even a bit of spilt oil. It was a fun race, and hopefully I can start saving up some cash to maybe get a short ram intake, or something along those lines to maybe start modding my car =)

Thanks again!

Lightbulb

Just remember that if you buy an intake header and stuff like that you can put that stufff on another lude if you decide on getting a five speed. Just a thought for you.
