Angry 89 Camaro VATS (PASSKEY) BYPASS HELP!!!!!

89 Camaro VATS (PASSKEY) BYPASS HELP!!!!! (this post)

I just recently obtained a nice 89 Camaro, runs real good and everything. Except the other day the car wouldn't start, noticed that the security light was staying on. Called and bought a new ignition with the same coded keys, replaced it, but still nothing. Called the dealer back and they are asking WAY to much to replace the security module, and "it has to be reprogrammed at the dealer", so another arm and leg..... I would like to drive the car, not have it sitting there looking pretty.
Does anyone know how to permantly bypass the VATS (PASSKEY) system so I can drive the car? I am not worried about damn security, the places I would leave the car are plenty secured.
I am so pissed that I am allmost ready to crush the thing and start over. Anyone out there that can help me please?

I had an '89 Camaro for years and never had a problem with the VATS.. it must suck when that thing craps out. Good luck!

Cool

Thanks for the info. Actually found someone who can reprogram the EMS PROM chip to not look for the VATS, thus letting me start my car. Cheaper reprogramming it then it would be to do another VATS module. Then I'll just have to install another security system for the would be thiefs. )

I had problems with mine as well. I replaced the lock cylinder 3 times before I re-wired the whole car in 1997 (I mean EVERYTHING!) and eliminated the OEM computer components altogether. Not a realistic proposition for most owners, I know.
TIP - Most electrical problems you will deal with on 88-92 Camaros / Firebirds will be surrounding 2 things...
1 - Grounds - GM did a horrible job with them on this car! Check the engine ground straps regularly and keep the connections clean!
2 - Distribution block - This will be a plastic piece near the battery on the radiator support with 4-6 cables radiating from it. Remove the cables and clean the contact area on them once a year. Corrosion is very prevalent with these.
