Are you talking about the Dash kits ?
Read the instructions.. there should be 1 piece of plastic that bolts up.

I read the directions and all it says it to put the cd player into the kit(cd player doesn't fit). then it says to put the kit into the dash(it shows them sliding it in), that doesn't fit either?

I've installed quite a few dash kits.
There are usually plastic tabs you have to break off in order to get it to fit.
Thats wierd tho.. all the kits i've seen has came with step by step guides.

The kit i bought has 3 steps in the directions, and my dash where the cd player goes is to big for the kit!

i got the same thing from Canadian tire, mine worked with a bit of customizing. just cut and pieced pieces together to make it fit. then i used plastic 2 plastic epoxy and crazy glue to attach it to my console so it wont break off, it holds the weight of the deck which is all that matters really.
the pics not great but i think u get the idea of how it worked...... i hope

yeah i dont know who told you to buy a mount kit, but you dont need it, a single din cd player will fit without mods in the console.

that might be why i needed a mounting kit, my car never had the original stereo in it or any stereo for that matter when i bought it so i'm doing everything from scratch to mount it basically
