Question Dodge Grand Caravan transmission

Help me please!

1999 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L V6 AWD 46,000 miles.

It was Icy here the other day in ther morning when I went to work. I started up the car & warmed it up for about 5 minutes (used D-icer on the windows). That's when it started...

The transmission will now not come out of 2nd gear most of the time. And the Service Engine Soon light says on when the engine is running.
It been about a week now with no change. Sometimes it works, very rarly though. Most of the time it tries to shift down when it should not???

I've seen alot of messages about the poor transmissions in these cars, could it be something else??? TP, MAP or ????

Thanks everyone

Change the transmission filter and fluid, then see if that helps, if not, then you need to have your transmission overhauled, anywhere from 1500-2500 for that..

My 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L stuck in second, with the Service Engine Soon light on.
It was the speed sensor, a $30 part that screws into the front of the trans. It can be checked by reading diagnostics. Not an uncommon problem, I believe.
Let us know.

Sensor

It does sound like the speed sensor, I have replaced mine once already and it is currently having a second one installed one year later. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with the Grand Caravan?

It is not a problem with the tranny but more of a problem of the manufacturer of the sensor. They tend to fail under certain conditions based on past experience with 3 other minivans. I've seen sudden cold spells do this to many vehicle makers transmissions.

The speed sensor going out is common problem. It went out on my old one twice. About $200.00 at the dealer to replace each time.

FWIW,

I had the same problem as you do bigrick.

For the minimal money it costs, I decided to let someone else take care of it for me. Less than an hour in the local shop.

Re: Dodge Grand Caravan transmission

I have a 96 GC. I'm not sure if this will work on yours but, I can cycle my ignition switch from off to on three times then leave it on. The Service Engine light will give a series of flashes that are a diagnostic code that tells you what component is going bad. If that doesn't work for you go to an Autozone or many other car parts chain stores. They will hook up a code reader and give you the same info for FREE.

Re: Dodge Grand Caravan transmission

I also had a speed sensor go on our '99 Grand Voyager (3.8, 4spd). The clue was that the speedo registered 0 mph and the trans went into limp mode but at least it would drive itself (up to 40 mph at 3000 rpm - always wondered why they put in a tach with an automatic trans - now I know it is so you don't blow it up limping it home!!). At least I saved a tow charge. Dealer repair, $100 or so but they did a fuel rail connector recall while they had it.
