Question Trouble with paperclip jump meathod

My check engine light came on so I wanted to check what was wrong. I thought I knew how to jump the port by the ecu but I cant get it to work. I put the paperclip in where the two wires in the green 2p plug and made it so each side touches.(right?) then I turned the ignition to ON(II) and expected the light to flash in code but it didnt. Did I put it in the right place? What could be wrong? Maybe its just the cold or something that bugged out the ecu, should I just reset the thing by taking out the fuse and see if it goes out? If there really is something wrong wouldnt the light comback anyway? Thaks for any help.
