Latest Race

Hey guys, just thought I'd drop in and tell you about my latest race. My friend has a '73 nova 350 4-bolt main with some light mods such as custom exhaust and headers. For months he had been saying that he could beat me, and I have been saying that I could beat him, so we decided to put this to rest last saturday night. We didn't have a flagger, so we did it ghetto style (me opening the window and dropping my arm). We both got away at the same time, and he got a carlength on me right at the start. I was able to hold him to that car length right up until about 90 mph and I started to creep up along side his rear 1/4 panel. But he let off then because it was past the 1/4 mile mark and he only wanted to race for 1/4. So the long and short of it is that I lost by a carlength

i told you ricky was gonna win! Nova pride!

but you still have a chance, you just gotta get him on the launch. you gotta make sure he botches his launch. psych him out. remember he's almost got 85ft-lbs on you.

if you can take off the line you'll be able to hold him off.

Have you been taking your medication TV, or have you just been taking Rednecks painkillers...

Well, after all, it is a 73 Nova. He can have all the bolt ons he likes, it's still a low compression motor with a fuel economy/emissions cam. Maybe not as bad as a later 350, but still pretty bad compared to a 1970 350...

My lugnut requires more torque than your LS1 makes.

I'm impressed that you kept up that well! It's they said, you'll need the better launch to officially beat him, but i'm surprised you were catching up in the top end! Sure, he's got the lower compression engine, but a V8 should have much longer legs then a V6...

That's just me though. Run him again and post it!

I WILL run him again, but this time with a flagger, because the only chance I have of beating him off the start is if I get a better RT than he does. My car just doesn't have a chance heads-up off the start against the torque of a chevy 350. If I do beat him, it will be driver, not car.

Actually Cbass, the 73 is smog exempt so it can have all the wastefull polutants that are on my motor(s) . And what you mean "Maybe not as bad as a later 350, but still pretty bad compared to a 1970 350... "

A 1970's 350 made almost 100hp more than a 73. In 71 all motors were changed to run on unleaded to meet smog regulations. Thus performance dropped. 350 performance really didnt come back untill the late 80s with the TPI 350's in the C4 Corvettes. Later on in 90-02 the F-bodies got cool 350's with introduction of EFI and tunnel ram type intakes like the LT-1 and LS-1.

Enough history lessons.

The motor in the 73 Nova in question is a fresh GM crate motor.

Basic as all hell.

8.5:1 compression
250 hp
305 ft-lbs

Hes got some minor bolt ons, intake manifold, headers, exhuast.

it gains him maybe 25hp, and maybe 40ft-lbs.
So..
275 hp
340 ft-lbs
3200lbs

The Maxima is probably pulling 230hp 220ft-lbs and same weight. The thing the Maxima has the Nova doesnt have is a steeper final drive. Reason why street racer is able to hang despite his disadvantage in power. The Nova is running a stock rear end at 3.08:1 ratio.

The Nova is also an auto, the Maxima isnt. So there again is a benefit to the Maxima. The Nova could use a shift kit, if it did the Maxima would have a hard time keeping up.

All in all, its a close match.

No, he's right, your car is a stickshift... this would explain why you get em off the line, but just don't have the top end gearing...

Is that how the engines finally got their strength back compared to the 70's and 80's junk? I've always been wondering how they drastically improved like that.

Well, in the 87-92 3rd Gen Camaros still had basic 350s with some TPI goods slapped on. Made 225hp in 87, 245hp in 92. Not much wow factor but things were looking up for compadre the F-Body.

In 93, the 4th Gen Camaro debuted with the introduction of the LT1 Corvette motor. In 93 they put out a good 275hp, 97 they laid down the law with 305hp. In 98 the LS1 replaced thr LT1 making 320hp.

And from what i've heard is that GM measures there HP numbers from RWHP. Figure in a 15% power loss through the drive line and they were making 368hp at the crank. Not sure if thats true but if it is Go 350!
