AF Super 7 Group Build!

All right, let's see them!

If you built along with the AF Super 7 group build, please post 1 to 3 of your favorite pics, a description of your build, and the link to your build thread. If you haven't finished, please post anyway- and feel free to update your pics when (if? ) you finish.

Thanks to everyone who participated! It's been great fun seeing all the different takes on this car.

Re: AF Super 7 Group Build!

Here's mine-

I'm building my 7 (still haven't finished yet) as a Lotus built Series III with a Lotus Twincam engine. My build thread is here.

The Twincam powered 7 became an instant classic as soon as it was discovered the engine would fit into the 7's frame. Lotus only made 13 in this configuration before they ended the Series III (and very soon thereafter stopped making 7s alltogther). But when Caterham took over, they made hundreds more. Many other Lotus built 7s were reengined with Twincams taken from Elans, Europas, or whereever else an enthusiast 7 owner could find one. As I was researching this build, I decided if I could do it this was really the version I wanted to do. Now I just have to finish it.

This is a very ambitious build for me. I've bitten off alot in trying to machine from scratch any parts I can for this model. It's slowed my progress to a crawl, but I'm learning alot, and when stuff goes well it's been very satisfying. But I really do need to update this one.

Now let's see yours!

Re: AF Super 7 Group Build!

Really beautiful model, it sure will be a stunner when done. Too bad I don't have a digicam, but I 'll try to get one ASAP; still a bit of work on mine, but it's getting together...

Thanks for the inspiration and the idea; it was fun to see so many different takes and variations, all as spectacular as the other.

Cheers, and I 'm looking forward to seeing what's for 08-08-08 deadline.

Re: AF Super 7 Group Build!

I know I didn't build along with a 1/24th Seven, but c'mon, it's me. Not like I haven't built my share of them. I'd really like to play, even be on the sidelines... I have to post something Super Seven today!
(I did set aside the parts for the build along, just got side tracked by other projects), and after all, I was a little "Sevened out" after the Blue and Orange ones...

Anyhow, here is an earlier one I did in 1/24 scale. Machined new wheels, intake horns, mirror, gearshift and a few other aluminum items. Added seatbelts and made the license, did a little wiring and plumbing...

Re: AF Super 7 Group Build!

Well I didn't get mine finished either as I have been too busy. I could have rushed and possibly got it done, but I didn't want to stuff up the paint anymore than I have.
I will hopefully have more in my progress thread in a few days.

Re: AF Super 7 Group Build!

Well alllllrighty then.

WIP Thread is here:

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ight=slant+six

-----

Man was this a fun build. Challenging but fun. Once I figured out how to cut half of the damn chassis and body out to fit the engine, the rest went rather smoothly!

This is the same customer that I built the 427 SOHC Galaxie and road racing Falcon for in the past, so he let me have a little creative control of the project. He just said he wanted a Slant Six Super 7 painted gunmetal. We ended up with Dupli-color Metallic Charcoal with clearcoat, and I added a blower to the Slant Six to make it a little more substantial.

What's funny is that the engine sits WAY further back than the original Cosworth four, so the weight distribution is likely better, and the center of gravity isn't ALL that much higher since the motor's lying on it's side! The engine is a Ross Gibson resin kit, which btw is AWESOME and comes with everything you could want. I had to make my own bracket for the alternator to re-route the belt for the blower. Engine is Dodge Hemi Red, the blower is a 4-71 from an AMT '32 Ford kit. The distributor is wired, but since it's near the bottom of the engine on the passenger side, there's no way to get a really good shot of it. Carb and air cleaner are from my parts box, and I fabricated the rear-mounted plenum behind the blower out of styrene block. Master cylinder is also from my parts box.

Wheels are from a Fujimi Mine's Lancer Evo VII, grey Dupli-color primer with clearcoat on top. The suspension is box stock though I did add rear disc brakes from my parts box, and ran some brake hoses up front. Front coilovers were painted silver then detailed with a red Sharpie.

The interior also required a lot of work--the original bench seat isn't at all modern or attractive, so I took one of the sets of seats from the Mine's Evo VII kit, sanded them down a bit on both sides to narrow them, and they just barely fit. The trans tunnel required a lot of reworking, and a shifter from my parts box. The dash was converted to left-hand-drive and a gauge cluster was added from the parts box too. Harnesses are masking tape painted red with Simpson decals and photo-etch belt buckles.

The rollcage took a lot of time and effort using styrene rod and candle flame to bend it (see the WIP), but turned out pretty good--I googled "Caterham racing" to find reference pics, so it's fairly close to competition Sevens. It was painted primer and clearcoat to match the wheels. Taillights are also from my parts box.

These pics were taken a little while before I did final touch-up. The car has now gone to the customer, so these pics show it with a few things still to fix. The body still required minor touchup paint (around the rollcage mount points, and the mini-windshield)... I also detailed the wheel centers, and drilled out the end of the side exhaust.

Re: AF Super 7 Group Build!

Where's the rest of 'em?
What have been posted are certainly a wide ranging set of interpretations, and really fine examples of modelling art.
My Seven is still bare plastic/resin on my workbench.
