5 point Seat Belts

You all know what im talkin about right?? The 5 Point "Racing Harnesses" or seat belts that you can put in your car/truck ??

well does anyone know if they are illegal in NY State ???

A friend of mine got stopped yesterday in his Eclipse and the cop gave him a ticket ( dont know how much) for his seat belt. Now my friend had taken out the stock seats and put in Sparco something or other racing seats..then converted the seat belts... and the cop said that ..because he did it himself..that it wasnt safe enough because "if you installed it wrong it could break or snap in an accident"

i think it bullshit..but thats just me.. i mean a seat belt is a seat belt and the 5 point ones are much safer than the stock ones (thats why they use them in race cars..duh)

j/w thanks!

I don't know about the law in NY state, but I do know that my auto-seatbelt in my car is a bit "engineered"... What I mean is that the cable which drew the autobelt back to the shoulder position snapped. My dad and I cut the cable, and physically dragged it back to the proper position. We then removed the power to the motor, and it now is a manual (I have to unbuckle it to get out of the car) seatbelt. This was done by *me* and I am by no means a mechanic. But it passes PA state safety inspection, which I know is more rigorous than NY safety inspection.

I assume your friend is fighting this citation???

I'd recommend the 6 point harness as opposed to the 5 point harness especially if you are a guy. The 6 point differs as it has two straps running either side of the crotch and in the event of an impact is less like to exert excessive pressure in a sensitive part of the male anatomy.
