Question E36 328i Window winding problem

Good morining,

My 328i '97 has the problem that when I try to wind the window up, it winds up wrong and then thus stops. I have checked the runners with their sir-clips, but they seem to be fine. I don't know if I'm not checking right but it is really annoying. Please could someone advise as I know the dealers will rip me off to fix this simple problem.

Thax,
Tyrone

(Please mail responses to [email protected] as I don't always have net access. Thanx again!!!!!!)

I too have a 328i (1996) and I am have horrible problems with my driver side window. Just recently, it came comepletely out of the rails and I had to take the door apart to fix it. I am very anoyed by this, and I want to get it fixed. Please let me know what you find out about this issue, as I am in the same boat as you and I dont want to deal with the dealership.

Cool E36 window winding problem

Hi,

I have since gotten my window working. I went to a dealership just to find out what could be wrong. I then spoke to a mechanic and he reconed that it is likely just one of the sliders that cracked, or broke. See what happend with mine is that it rolled down fine, but when I rolled it back up, the window "fell forward" and wouldn't go up further. Now a common problem apparently is that there are two sliders when you open the door (behind the door panel) that on the ends of the mechanism's two arms. (The window winder has a scissor action) If one of these sliders break, the window will tilt either backward or forward. My car is a right hand drive thus my description of how I fixed it should be followed accordingly.

I took off the door panel, and had a look at the sliders (after I bought one at R25 [R9,60=$1]) and couldn't see a problem. So I phoned a buddy that has had 3 E36's to come have a look. After he looked, he said the sliders were in tact, but the one supporting arm has moved like two to three millimeters. This arm is the one fastened at the righthand side bottom corner, when you look at the door from the inside. Use the No.10 spanner (the one I used) in your toolbox, and loosten it. If it has moved, you'll see where it is supposed to be. Move it to the right position, and tighten it again. Manually (thus not rolling it up automatically) roll up the window and see if it goes up right. If not adjust it again.

This fixed my window, and it in the end only cost me some of my time, as I took the slider back for a refund.

I hope you come right. Please let me know.

Cheers,
Gizmo
